Bosch 100 ft. Laser Level Review

The Bosch 100 ft. Cross-Line Laser Level Kit is designed for professionals, meaning it prioritizes what trade professionals need most in a laser level, and it’s built to withstand jobsite conditions and workday demands. These are the features that stand out the most to us when considering the priorities of trade professionals.

Green-beam Technology

Green beams are four times brighter than industry-standard red beams. The result is literally easier sight lines and less errors from beams with an accuracy within 1/8 in. at 30 ft. and up to 100 ft. Built-in VisiMax™ Technology further enhances visibility by monitoring tool temperature and power consumption, allowing this Bosch laser level to adjust brightness to the environment, optimizing its visibility. This auto-adjusting also adds to the tools overall lifespan by preventing overheating.

Smart Pendulum System and Mounting Versatility

The Smart Pendulum System auto-levels the laser to display accurate beams in any setting. It also signals for out-of-level conditions to prevent inaccurate setup, or if adjustments are needed due to a change in environment.

And since you can’t always predict where and how you may need to position your level. Bosch offers serveral options with this cross-line laser level. There is an integrated ¼ in. threading mount for tripod attachment, a strong magnetic LB10 L-Bracket, and a DK10 ceiling clip. All of these options coupled with the Smart Pendulum System ensure you get accurate readings where you need them.

IP65-rated Construction & “Roll Cage” Design

Made with a heavy-duty housing that is safe from high-impact drops, falls, kicks, or general jobsite damage. It also has a dust-tight and waterproof construction to prevent water and debris from getting in and corrupting the laser level.

The all-around “roll cage”-inspired rubber overmold further protects the laser level from high-impact incidents.

8-Hour Operating Time & Power Flexibility

When paired with a fully charged Bosch 3.7V Li-ion 3.0 Ah battery users can expect a full-day 8-hour battery life. The included USB-C charging cord offers continuous use even while it provides fast charging of the Li-ion battery. And the GLL100-42GL can also utilize standard AA batteries if needed.

Value & Where to Buy

You can purchase the new Bosch GLL100-42GL 100 ft. Cross-Line Laser Level Kit for $259 from The Home Depot. At The Home Depot you can also find cross-line laser levels from DEWALT, Milwaukee, Leica, among other brands. For $259 the GLL100-42GL prices right in the middle when compared to similar laser levels. However, for only $40 more than the DEWALT (tool only). The Home Depot kit includes four AA batteries, an L-bracket, ceiling clips, and a hard carry case. Then the Milwaukee basic kit for $10 more includes an L-bracket, different accessories, but no ceiling clip.

Bosch offers a One (1) Year Measuring Tool Limited Warranty, plus an additional year of warranty coverage if you register your tool within eight weeks of purchase.

All-in-all, the whole Bosch 100 ft. Cross-Line Laser Level kit is fairly priced when compared to similar kits. It may come down to what you use your laser level for, but the Bosch kit at its price has more applications than the Milwaukee kit.

“What is a palm router?”

A palm router, also known as an edge or trim router, is a woodworking tool that can cut and level wood. It’s a lightweight tool that is capable of plunge cuts, cutting down or directly into a piece of wood, and intricate cuts. This is why it’s often called a “trim router”, because it’s ideal for making intricate cuts in trim. It’s also commonly used to cut out copies of wood pieces or custom wood cutouts.

This Bosch 18V Palm Router is a professional-grade palm router and not necessary for someone who is just starting out. But could be perfect for the diy’er who is ready to take on more advance projects and techniques.

Bosch 18V CORE18V® Lithium-Ion 4Ah Battery

The Bosch GBA18V40 18V Battery is packed with 21,700 single-layered lithium-ion cells in an innovative battery design with copper end plates, power rails, and a flexible circuit board. All of this creates a more efficient battery with less resistance which provides twice the runtime and 60% more power than the previous Bosch BAT612 18V 2 Ah battery. When this battery power and efficiency combine with the palm router’s brushless motor you get a peak horsepower of 1.39 and 10k-30k RPM.

Made with Bosch’s CoolPack™ 2.0 technology for temperature control and overall longer battery life. It’s lightweight, only 1.10 lbs., making it a perfect pairing for Bosch 18V Palm Router since users won’t lose control from the added weight.

Bosch 18V Palm Router Features

Like most tools, there are a ton of different palm routers on the market with tons of different price points. To speed things up we are just going to highlight the key features that excite us the most about the Bosch 18V Brushless Colt™ Palm Router Kit.

Best Power-to-Size Ratio

This Bosch palm router measures 6.6 in. X 3.7 in. and weighs less than five pounds with the battery, yet it produces up to 30k RPM and has a 1.39 max horsepower. The router also has “Constant Response Circuitry” also monitors and maintains the speed of the palm router. You are getting a tremendous amount of consistent, steady power in a smaller and easy to control tool.

Compact & Ergonomic

It fits comfortably in your palm and all around is a great size and weight for maintaining optimal control. Bosch took this a step further with an ergonomic handle with a rubber overmold, and finger support pockets. This allows you to have a higher or lower grip on the router. So, you can adjust your grip based on the project. All of the buttons and controls are located in easy-to-access and intuitive locations, such as when adjusting the speed and cut depth.

Rough & Fine Depth Adjustment

Users can make precise cuts in 1/64 in. increments, an exceptional amount of control. Also, this router has a max cut depth of 1-11/32 inches or about 1.34 inches. This is a strong range for a simple router.

Safety Features

The Bosch 18V Palm Router has quite a few safety features. Things like the ergonomic design fall into both user experience and safety, but we’re just going to focus on safety features:

  • Auto shutoff fall detection.
  • Soft-start circuitry for lower start-up torque.
  • Restart protection during battery changes.

Accessories

In addition to the features, this kit comes with a few router accessories. Here is everything in the kit:

  • Bosch GKF18V-25 18V Brushless Colt™ Palm Router with Fixed Base
  • GBA18V-40 CORE18V® 4 Ah Advanced Power Battery
  • GAL18V-40 18V Charger
  • PR011 Plunge Base
  • RA1175 Edge Routing Dust Hood
  • PR012 Surface Routing Dust Hood
  • Chip Shield
  • Parallel Guide
  • PR114 ¼ In. Self-Releasing Collet Chuck
  • Collet Chuck Wrench
  • Hard Shell Carrying Case with Foam Inserts

Back to Guide

Where to Buy

Currently, the Bosch 18V Brushless Colt™ Palm Router Kit is available for $399 on Amazon. There isn’t one other exact kit to compare, as other routers are either sold individually or are corded, and I didn’t find another kit as comprehensive as this one. So while there is quite a range of prices, I think this router kit from Bosch is fairly priced when you consider you are getting a tool, battery, charger, carrying case, and seven additional accessories.

Bosch cordless power tools are also covered by a 5-year limited warranty.

Back to Guide

Final Review

All around, the Bosch 18V Brushless Colt™ Palm Router Kit provides a great palm router with a great battery platform for professionals. Pros will love the control and the battery efficiency. In addition to the router quality, this kit includes tons of great router accessories, which provide a ton of added value and makes a great toolbox addition for Bosch users.

Whether you’re trying to take out a wall, installing plumbing, or just trying to hang a TV, it’s important to know what’s behind a wall before you blindly break or drill into it. Doing so can result in a number of costly and dangerous errors, such as: breaking a water pipe, damaging a stud, hitting a live wire, and so on. The Bosch Wall Scanner GMS120-27 just came to the U.S. market and was designed to help trade professionals identify these concerns, plus some more features to make it the preferred choice.

Today we’re giving this new Bosch wall scanner the once over, exploring its features, testing its user-friendliness, and comparing it to other wall scanners on the market.

Bosch Wall Scanner Overview

  • Model #: GMS120-27
  • Power Source: Two AA batteries or rechargeable Bosch LM-BAT 3.7V Lithium-Ion 1.0 Ah Battery Pack.
  • Features: Detects magnetic and non-magnetic metals, wood beams and live wires with a max scan depth of 120 mm. Identifies the center of objects and current. Has a color-coded marking hole and optional audio scanner. It’s ergonomically designed with an IP54 housing. Consumers have choice of two power sources.
  • Price: $95.99-$100.00
  • Where to Buy: $95.99 on Amazon.
  • Learn More: Bosch

Power Source

The Bosch Wall Scanner GMS120-27 gives consumers two power source options: two AA batteries, or a USB-C rechargeable Bosch LM-BAT 3.7V Lithium-Ion 1.0 Ah Battery Pack, which is the same battery used to power the Bosch laser levels.

Both options fit in the back battery panel. These two options are extremely convenient for users. AA batteries are extremely accessible. Users aren’t forced to buy another piece of Bosch equipment, and they make a great backup option in the event the Bosch battery isn’t charged.

Performance Review

So you want to know how the Bosch Wall Scanner GMS120-27 works? Fortunately, like most wall scanners it’s easy to use. You turn it on, press it to the drywall, and drag it across the surface to scan. But what key features make this Bosch wall scanner stand out against other wall scanners?

Detects 4 Types of Material

The Bosch wall scanner can detect both magnetic and non-magnetic metals, wood beams, and live wires, and has a max scan depth of 120 mm. This is what the “120” means in GMS120-27.

Here are the scan depths for each material:

  • Non-magnetic: 120 mm
  • Magnetic: 100 mm
  • Live electric: 50 mm
  • Wood beams behind drywall: 30 mm

Easy-to-read Display

This scanner identifies the center of a material with a series of rings. The closer the scanner moves to the center of a material the more rings light up. There is also a voltage indicator that lights up whenever a current is detected.

Manual Material Selection

Want to scan for wood beams? This sensor can be turned on or off easily. The button is on the main display next to the Metal/Electricity Button.

This scanner can also be calibrated if a wall has a mesh reinforcement like a concrete wall with reinforcing mesh or rebar, which would mess with readings. To calibrate the scanner, the user just needs to run the scanner around the surface in a large circle to give it a reading on the reinforcement, and it will then automatically adjust.

QR Code for Help

Are you having trouble using the scanner? Good news: Bosch put a QR code on the back of the scanner that routes you to the owner’s manual, along with FAQ’s and video tutorials.

Design Review

Everyone loves to know what functions and features a tool has. But a lot of the time it doesn’t matter if that tool isn’t easy or comfortable to use. The Bosch Wall Scanner GMS120-27 has a comfortable ergonomic design that includes recessed handles within the center body.

This wall scanner also has a really nice display. The color-coded marking hole is vibrant and easy to notice a change from green to red. The center ring sensor and voltage sensor have strong illumination and great contrast, making it easy to read. It also makes it easy to mark where materials are detected so you know their location when you pull the scanner away.

The sensors also appear to be pretty sensitive and there’s no lag when identifying the material.

This is a nice, durable wall scanner. It has an IP54-rating, meaning it can withstand dust, rain, accidental drops, and rattling around in a toolbox.

Value

There are a lot of wall scanners on the market. There are a lot of cheap ones too. However, this is a you-get-what-you-pay-for situation. The everyday Joe or Jane who just needs a wall scanner a couple times throughout their lives to hang a TV or a shelf can get away with a $20 scanner. But the trade professional who is doing this every day at different locations in various conditions needs something durable and highly accurate.

The Bosch GMS120-27 retails around $100, but can be found on Amazon for only $95.99. 120 mm is a generous scan depth, and the Bosch GMS120-27 is cheaper than comparable models. All around, it’s fairly priced.

Is it Worth It?

There isn’t much to dispute about the Bosch Wall Scanner GMS120-27. It is well-designed, easy to use, and fairly priced. It’s not a necessary piece of equipment for the everyday consumer, but is a great option for trade professionals.

In October, Bosch released its lineup of 2025 Bosch power tools and equipment that included over 30 new tools. While the majority of this release focuses on Bosch’s 18V tools, it’s the three new utility knives that offer U.S. consumers something totally new. Until now, Bosch utility knives have been sold exclusively in Europe, now there are three models available in the U.S.: a folding knife, a retractable knife, and a snap-off utility knife. Today we’re opening up the Bosch 3-piece Utility Knife Set to see if they’re worth the wait.

“What is a utility knife used for?”

A utility knife is a toolbelt staple across various trades thanks to its multiple uses. It’s often associated with drywall installation or wall repair, but it’s used by electricians to strip wire,  and by carpenters to score shims for window installation. Utility knives are used to cut everything from carpet to cardboard, and even basic tasks like opening boxes.

There are a lot of utility knives on the market from reputable brands. So why is Bosch releasing these utility knives in the U.S. now?

Bosch has been developing high-quality power tools, vehicles, appliances, and more since it was founded in Germany in 1886. Its products reflect the company’s high standards. So, even a basic utility knife needs to stand out in terms of quality. Bosch has sold folding and snap-off utility knives in the European market. Perhaps after years of customer feedback in Europe, Bosch has designed superior utility knives for trade professionals.

Overview of Bosch Utility Knives

All three Bosch utility knives are laid out against a ruler showing that each knife is about 7 inches long.

As we mentioned, this release includes three different utility knives: folding, snap-off, and retractable. Each of these knives is uniquely designed and functions differently, but all three do share some qualities.

All three share the same heavy-duty yet lightweight aluminum body housing. Each handle is ergonomically designed and fitted with a rubber overmold for a controlled grip. Each knife is also roughly seven inches at full length.

Bosch Folding Utility Knife

  • Model #: BOSCH H11-11100-1
  • Features: Lightweight and compact design with rubber overmold handle grip and a uniquely grooved thumb rest provide comfort, better control, and safer cutting. Aluminum housing provides durability without unwanted weight. Toolless blade change plus integrated blade storage for quick and safe blade changes. Its compact size and belt clip allow it to either comfortably fit in or hook to a pocket. Also has a built-in string/strap cutter, and one-button folding lock.
  • Best Application: Heavy-duty cutting – rough cuts in materials like drywall. Best choice for those who like to keep their utility knife in or on a pocket.
  • Price: $14.99 individually.
  • Where to Buy: Amazon

Bosch 18mm Snap-off Utility Knife

Bosch H11 12100 snap-off utility knife

  • Model #: BOSCH H11-13000-1
  • Features: Compact and ergonomic design with rubber overmold handle provides precision control, while built-in blade snap-off tool and one-button blade advance ensure ease of use. Made of a durable yet lightweight aluminum housing. The knife is roughly seven inches long, a great length for toolbox or toolbag.
  • Best Application: Not for heavy-duty cutting. Great for jobs that require frequent, precise cuts where a fresh blade is needed, such as vinyl wrapping.
  • Price: $14.99 individually.
  • Where to Buy: Amazon

Bosch Retractable Utility Knife

  • Model #: BOSCH H11-12100-1
  • Features: Ergonomically designed with rubber overmold handle, thumb rest, and cushioned slide button for secure and comfortable control. Has a built-in string/strap cutter and spare blade storage. The toolless blade change keeps blade changes safe. The tool is roughly seven inches long, a great length for a toolbox or toolbag.
  • Best Application: Heavy-duty cutting. Best choice for those who keep their utility knife in their toolbag or toolbox.
  • Price: $14.99 individually.
  • Where to Buy: Amazon

Overall Review of Bosch Utility Knives

A utility knife needs to be sharp, stable, and safe. Bosch got these down. First, the lightweight, compact, and ergonomic designs, complete with rubber overmolds, make these utility knives easy to maneuver. Utility knife blades are “razor sharp” so accidental cuts are a safety concern. This risk is lowered by creating knives with secure grips providing better control.

The aluminum housing provides durability yet keeps the tools light enough for ease of use.

The knives are also full of convenience features like integrated blade snap off, and one button smooth advance that limit starting and stopping, which can result in better productivity and improved safety. All of these are features appreciated by beginner-to-experienced trade workers and DIY’ers alike.

Where to Buy Bosch Utility Knives

Are you eager to try out these new to the U.S.A. Bosch utility knives?

The Bosch utility knives can be purchased as a 3-piece set for $39.99 on Amazon and ACME Tools, or individually for $14.99 each. The Bosch Folding and Snap-off utility knives are also available as a combo set. While there are certainly cheaper utility knives, they are exactly that…cheap!

Bosch isn’t trying to sell us a top-of-the-line utility knife that will “change your life”. No. Bosch made quality utility knives that price on par with other utility knives on the market. If anything, they might be underpriced. If they are, we recommend you buy Bosch utility knives now before the price goes up. Because right now you can get professional-grade utility knives with a heavy-duty body, packed with convenience features, and a comfortable design that are safer and easy to control at great prices.

New Bosch Hand Tools

Let’s go back to our question from earlier, why now? With a lineup of new and improved 18V power tools, why did Bosch release these utility knives? Some speculate that these Bosch utility knives signal the arrival of more small hand tools from Bosch. This falls in line with our guess that Bosch is experimenting with the ROI of selling small hand tools in the U.S. market.

But it could also mean nothing more than Bosch hopes these will be welcome additions to Bosch loyalists’ toolbags. What do you think? And if this is the signal that additional small Bosch hand tools are coming, which items would you like to see in the American market?

TIA Review of Bosch Tools Releases

Bosch did a great job of addressing the top power tool concerns across all brands with this release.

The Turbo charger gets you back to work faster. The 15 minute recharge time is almost too fast. However, tradespersons can count on their batteries being ready to get back to work as soon as they are.

We are quite happy with the improvements the additional tools have made in terms of power, accuracy, and efficiency. However, Bosch also ensured that each tool had safety features. Some of these features are double-duty, such as the impact wrench’s auto slow down feature. It helps users maintain control but it also prevents damage and worker injury. The band saw and the planer both have easy, tool-free blade change, along with guards for added protection.

Bosch tools can price higher than comparable brands like Milwaukee, DEWALT, or Makita. However, the prices are comparable overall. Bosch also has exciting battery advancements coming up that may soon put their tool power ahead of competitors.

Overall, there is an impressive line-up of tools in this release that provide excellent power, accuracy, efficiency, and safety for users.

Where to Buy Bosch Tools

All of the tools we covered today can be bought from the Bosch Amazon Store and are Prime eligible.

Last week RYOBI announced a new battery coming this summer, the RYOBI ONE+ 18V Lithium High Performance EDGE. While RYOBI announced limited information about this new battery, it potentially rivals the Milwaukee FORGE battery. These batteries supposedly have a similar battery technology that improves power, runtime, heat management, and overall lifespan. But which battery is better?

Today we are going RYOBI EDGE vs Milwaukee FORGE to find out which power tool battery is better, and if either of these batteries are worth upgrading your battery platform.

RYOBI VS Milwaukee

RYOBI EDGE Battery Coming Soon

RYOBI EDGE battery YouTube comments

First, I’d like to mention that RYOBI has provided limited details about its new RYOBI ONE+ 18V HP EDGE batteries. The RYOBI EDGE teaser video was immediately hit with comments calling it “uninformative”. Between the video, the webpage, and newsletter announcements, RYOBI has only publicly stated this battery will deliver “more, more, and MORE!”

But HOW are RYOBI EDGE batteries better than previous generations?

Tabless Lithium

RYOBI reported the new EDGE battery will utilize tabless lithium battery cells. While that’s all RYOBI has publicly said about the coming battery platform, info is circulating that each battery will have 21,700 tabless lithium cells.

But what is tabless lithium?

Tabless lithium is a new battery technology that offers better performance with simultaneous better cooling. It’s known for powering the new 2022 Tesla models, but power tool brands are racing to apply it to their own battery technology.

The Milwaukee MX FUEL REDLITHIUM FORGE battery is the first power tool battery to apply tabless lithium technology. The result? Improved run time, better cooling, and shorter charge times, all of which should hopefully result in longer battery lifespan.

RYOBI EDGE VS Milwaukee FORGE

Without more info about the upcoming RYOBI EDGE battery we can’t say for sure which battery is better, but we can make some assumptions.

What We Know

  • RYOBI and Milwaukee are both owned by Techtronic Industries (TTI).
  • RYOBI tools are generally cheaper and geared towards homeowners and DIY’ers.
  • RYOBI EDGE appears to be an all-tabless lithium battery line.
  • Milwaukee FORGE uses multiple battery technologies.
  • Milwaukee tools are generally more expensive and geared toward skilled trade professionals.

These facts leave me confident about a few things:

Shared Features

TTI designed Milwaukee FORGE batteries to fit existing M18 batteries. I bet TTI also designed RYOBI EDGE batteries to fit existing RYOBI ONE+ power tools. We need to wait to confirm this, but I think TTI sees the advantage of not forcing potential and/or existing customers to upgrade all of their power tools for a battery.

The fact that both brands have a new tabless lithium battery that is compatible with existing 18V power tools is great, but also pretty much where the similarities between these two batteries end.

Back to Guide

Advantages of RYOBI EDGE

RYOBI Tools logo

  • RYOBI EDGE should be cheaper than Milwaukee FORGE.
  • RYOBI EDGE can set a new baseline of battery power for everyday consumers.

The RYOBI EDGE battery will cost less than tabless lithium Milwaukee FORGE batteries.

RYOBI products are generally cheaper than Milwaukee products. RYOBI is designed for the everyday homeowner and DIY’er. RYOBI makes good products. But their power tools are designed for much smaller projects than Milwaukee power tools, which need to stand up to repeated heavy use.

The RYOBI EDGE battery will also cost less than the tabless lithium Milwaukee FORGE battery because it’s a smaller battery. The RYOBI EDGE battery is a 4.0Ah tabless lithium battery and the Milwaukee FORGE is available as an 8.0Ah or 12.0Ah tabless lithium battery. The Milwaukee FORGE battery is just a much bigger battery. However, a lot of home projects don’t need that much power.

The advantage of RYOBI making a 4.0Ah battery is that they can cut the cost for consumers without sacrificing the construction or quality.

RYOBI is also doing everyday consumers a favor. Tabless lithium is clearly an exciting technology, but the pros don’t get all the power. RYOBI created a battery that is accessible for most people.

“Do I need a RYOBI EDGE battery?

Some RYOBI customers are asking if they will want to upgrade their existing RYOBI battery to a new RYOBI EDGE battery.

Our answer: YesIF you use a lot of high-draw power tools (chain saws, circular saws, string trimmers, etc.).

Also, only upgrade your battery if you want more power. If you’re satisfied by the power and performance of your current RYOBI power tools, then wait until your current battery performance starts to diminish or a tool purchase demands the upgrade.

Back to Guide

Advantages of Milwaukee FORGE

Milwaukee Tools logo

  • Consumers know all the specs and features of the new Milwaukee FORGE tabless lithium batteries.
  • Milwaukee FORGE tabless lithium batteries bring pros a whole new level of power.
  • The Milwaukee FORGE battery line is not limited to one battery technology.

Right now, the biggest advantage of the Milwaukee MX FUEL REDLITHIUM FORGE batteries is that they are available now and we have all the facts.

New Milwaukee FORGE Battery Features

  • Have twice as much runtime than popular MX FUEL REDLITHIUM 6.0Ah batteries
  • Can fully recharge in as little as 65 minutes
  • Have multiple COOL-CYCLE features for heat management
  • Reportedly has the longest overall life of Milwaukee batteries
  • Compatible with existing M18 power tools

Consumers can get this Milwaukee FORGE battery today and know exactly what’s promised. You can’t say the same about RYOBI EDGE.

The next biggest advantage is power. The Milwaukee FORGE tabless lithium battery is available as an 8.0Ah or 12.0Ah battery. This battery is huge. These batteries have 2-3 times more amp hours than what we know RYOBI EDGE batteries have, which pros need on the jobsite.

Now, Milwaukee has a few different Milwaukee FORGE batteries. The Milwaukee MX FUEL REDLITHIUM FORGE 8.0Ah and 12.0Ah batteries are the first to use tabless lithium. The new smaller 6.0Ah batteries use pouch cell. In theory Milwaukee could transition to strictly tabless. We don’t know. But what this variety of battery technology says about the Milwaukee FORGE battery line is that Milwaukee won’t limit its batteries to a single technology. As new technology develops, so will Milwaukee batteries.

We can’t say for sure that RYOBI EDGE will be a solely tabless lithium line. But as of right now, that’s how RYOBI has positioned it.

“Do I need a Milwaukee FORGE battery?”

These new Milwaukee FORGE batteries cost $849-$1,149. Is the battery upgrade necessary for the skilled trade professional?

Our answer: Yes–IF you need more power for those high-draw power tools.

Back to Guide

TTI: the ultimate winner

Techtronic Industries (TTI) logo

Look, it’s simple:

  • If you are a homeowner or a weekend DIY’er, RYOBI EDGE is the clear winner.
  • If you’re a skilled trade professional, then the new Milwaukee FORGE batteries are perfect to power your high-draw power tools day in and day out.

But the true winner here is TTI. TTI successfully developed a new battery for two different markets before any other brand.

The Milwaukee FORGE 8.0 & 12.0Ah batteries are already available at The Home Depot and RYOBI EDGE batteries will be out this summer. Technically, another DIY brand could sneak in and beat RYOBI to market, but we’re confident that the RYOBI EDGE battery will be available soon.

As the construction world has shifted from corded to cordless power 18V and 20V batteries have reigned supreme. While these batteries pack a punch in terms of performance, they tend to be bulky and heavy. Bosh 12V tools offer a more agile option for woodworkers, especially when using a smaller, lighter tool makes sense, such as, when installing cabinets and trim.

Advantages of 12V Batteries

12V batteries are smaller and lighter than 18V and 20V batteries. Because of this, 12V batteries are great for working in small spaces, users experience less fatigue, 12V tools are less top-heavy, and overall are easier to handle and work with. 12V batteries also charge faster.

Bosch isn’t the first brand to release 12V batteries and tools. Milwaukee has a broad range of tools under their M12 line, but comes in short for woodworking. Bosch 12V tools pick up where Milwaukee leaves off and then some.

Bosch 12V Batteries

Bosch 12V Tools

The compact Bosch 12V Max Lithium-ion batteries (BAT414-2PK) promise 50% more power than previous Bosch batteries while weighing a mere 0.3 lbs. These batteries operate in cold conditions up to -4°F. Bosch 12V Tools – Wrap Up

Bosch has filled a void with their line of up 12V tools and accessories.

Before these tools came out, your only option for cordless powered woodworking were heavy, bulky 18V or 20V tools or being constrained by an extension cord. These can be a big interference when working, especially when installing cabinets or trim.

It’s nice to have a smaller, lighter tool that’s easier to finesse when balancing upper cabinets, working in confined spaces, or doesn’t just tire you out from holding for extended periods of time. On top of that, Bosch 12V batteries don’t sacrifice power. You still get that professional-grade performance.

Overall, Bosch 12V Tools provide a great, powerful yet lighter option to carpenters and woodworkers.

Bosch is among our favorite brands here at Tools In Action. Bosch stands behind a mission to lead the world in the design and manufacturing of power tools and power tool accessories. The Bosch Power Tools Division releases over 100 products each year, each designed with professional tradespeople in mind. The new 18V Bosch Cordless Jig Saw (GST18V-50N) is next in their lineup of high-performing power tools looking to become a staple amongst carpenters, tilers, masons, and experienced DIY’ers.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw Overview

The Bosch 18V Cordless Jig Saw, like all jig saws, is designed to make manually controlled, curved, irregular, and intricate cuts through sheet materials such as wood, plastic, metal, ceramic, porcelain, and more. This model promises corded performance from a battery-powered tool. It has a 4.9 in. cutting capability in wood, a speed cut rate of up to 3,500 strokes per minute (spm), and a high-efficiency, long-life brushless motor to name just a few top features.

Overview of stats and features:

  • Battery-powered functionality coupled to a brushless motor
  • Up to 3,500 spm
  • Variable-speed control dial, plus feathering speed-control trigger
  • Four-orbital action settings
  • Die-cast aluminum footplate with no-mar plastic overshoe accessory
  • Tool-free T-shank blade change
  • LED near the blade
  • T-shank blade
  • Weight: 4.4 lbs.
  • Up to three-year warranty

Let’s take a deeper look at all of these and more.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw Features

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

The Bosch Cordless Jig Saw is typically sold as a bare tool. For our purposes, we powered it with a Bosch CORE18V 4.0Ah battery (GBA18V40) and ran it with the included T-shank jig saw blade.

This jig saw weighs less than five pounds and has dimensions of 8.46 in. X 3.1 in. X 8.5 in. It is equipped with a high-efficiency brushless motor designed to last longer than older motor models.

The Bosch Cordless Jig Saw relies on the Bosch CORE18V batteries. These batteries feature CoolPack 2.0 technology for heat management, leading to longer runtimes and increased lifespan. These batteries’ 21700 cell technology is the most advanced in the industry, with nearly 50% more energy capacity than competing 18650 cell technology.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

The Bosch Cordless Jig Saw lock switch prevents accidental starts. It is convenient and easy to locate just above the trigger. The handle has a rubber overmold on top making for a comfortable grip.

The orbital action selector lever allows you to adjust the orbital motion speed best suited to the material you are cutting.

The selector operates on a scale of zero to three. The higher the setting the more orbital action the tool produces.

This Bosch Cordless Jig Saw offers a second means of speed control. The speed feathering trigger allows you to set your speed from one (low) to six (high). Six provides a max speed of up to 3,500 spm.

This jig saw has an LED light to illuminate the cutting path. Because, when using a jig saw, it is always helpful to be able to see what and where you are cutting.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

For dust management, the Bosch Cordless Jig Saw has a few options. A built-in dust blower can be used. A detachable dust hood (pictured above) is also provided. The detachable dust hood inhibits sawdust from flying up while in use.

The provided dust extraction outlet can be easily installed and then connected to a vacuum hose to pull dust away completely.

The die-cast aluminum footplate is 6.5″ x 3″ and can be paired with the non-marring overshoe to minimize scuffing. Bosch also includes an Anti-Splinter insert (not pictured).

Bosch designed this jig saw to be able to switch blades fast, easily, and tool-free. Users just need to turn the tool off and remove the battery, then safely switch blades manually.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw Performance

The Bosch 18V Cordless Jig Saw has great cutting power and maneuverability. The handle has a good grip. The stability from the ample footplate allows users a secure and confident feeling when cutting. Adjusting the speed and orbital action is straightforward with several setting combination options.

The built-in blower, dust extractor accessory, and LED light all make sure a user can clearly see where they are cutting in a variety of conditions.

Lastly, we can’t skip over the performance of this battery-powered saw. While the Bosch CORE18V batteries are not included, they make this cordless jig saw nearly indistinguishable from a corded rival.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw Value

Right now, the Bosch 18V Cordless Jig Saw retails for $159 at Lowes. This price lands in the middle when compared to other comparable, cordless jig saws. At this point, it can come down to brand preference. However, the Bosch Cordless Jig Saw is a professional-grade tool and less expensive than similar models made by Milwaukee, RIDGID, DEWALT, and Makita.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw Wrap Up

The Bosch Cordless Jig Saw ticks all the boxes of what to look for in a jig saw: adequate power, maneuverability, easy to adjust, cuts a variety of materials, and multiple features for a clear line of sight. It’s a professional-grade power tool but simple enough for almost anyone to use. So, it’s perfect for professionals and serious DIY’ers, and an especially great tool for anyone invested in the Bosch CORE18V battery system.

Bosch Power Tools has a highly respectable product lineup.  Though anyone is welcome to purchase Bosch equipment, the company tends to cater to professional, experienced users around the world, with dedicated websites to clients in the US and Canada. With plenty of experience and testing under my belt, I can say that Bosch equipment is dependable and easy to work with. And specifically, Bosch has been my favorite oscillating tool supplier.  And they did not disappoint with their CORE18V Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool.

Read on if you’re interested in a great oscillating multi-tool.

How to Sharpen Oscillating Blades

Want to extend the life of your oscillating blades? Read our article Sharp Pog – Oscillating Blade Sharpener Review or buy it on Amazon.

Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool Overview

The Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool centers around cutting blades that can go through various types of wood, plastic, and metal.  The selling point is really the variety of blades that can be fitted to the Bosch StarlockPlus frame shown below.  As I’m sure you can appreciate, different materials will respond differently to various blades.  With high force and the heat generated through cutting, the wrong blade can damage the tool itself and put your surroundings at risk with sparks, flying debris, or even the tool “getting away from you”.  Of course, it is possible to have a separate cutting tool for every type of material you encounter.  But there is only so much room in your tool chest, and budget!  The Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool comes with a variety of blades that turn one piece of equipment into many. Keeping track of several blades is far simpler than keeping track of several distinct tools.

Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool Features

An EC brushless 18V motor powers the StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool (Model GOP18V-28N), delivering enough power to handle high-end professional jobs safely.

Something I appreciate that may not be evident is the 2.8-degree arc afforded by the oscillating multi-tool. Some jobs will require awkward positioning and working in close, tight spaces.  Sometimes this can force you to choose between precision and accessibility.  Without giving in to wobble or weak performance, the Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool allows you to arc the blade up to 2.8 degrees away from horizontal.

This cutting tool only weighs in at 2.7 lbs, a convenience that anyone will appreciate.  Of course, it is easy to skimp on weight if the tool components are flimsy, but lightweight combined with stability and decent performance is a testament to Bosch engineering.

As far as protection, the associated warranty lasts three years for the tool itself, two years for the battery, and the buyer gets a 30-day “money-back guarantee” if there is any dissatisfaction with the product.

The Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool is powered by a Bosch CORE18V lithium-ion battery.  Generally, CORE18V battery packs are, at the time of this writing, the “latest and greatest” in power tool battery technology.  CORE18V batteries can be recharged and put to use for high-intensity jobs without compromising safety or adding on lots of burdensome extra weight.  Given that materials to be cut and cutting locations can vary greatly, the inherent flexibility of being cordless is certainly a plus.

Bosch Starlock Oscillating Tool

The slide-style power switch is convenient and easy to manipulate.  As Bosch is geared towards knowledgeable users, this is my preferred option over a paddle switch design.  That said, the light weight, reduced vibration, and ergonomic grip of the Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool all go a long way in reducing grip fatigue and subsequently maximizing control during prolonged use.  And remember, the slide switch does not turn off blade movement if the tool gets away from you.  PPE and attentiveness to the job at hand are vital when working with blades activated by slide-switch design.

Bosch Starlock Oscillating Tool

With a range of 8,000 – 20,000 oscillations per minute (OPM), the Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool does not shy away from high performance.  The variable speed dial lets you adjust blade oscillation speed, customizing cutting power and heat/friction generated as you go through a material.  Remember that at the higher end of the tool’s OPM capacity, vibration reduction is critical for not only the user’s comfort but also tool longevity.  We tested the multi-tool at variable speeds and subjected it to various materials and can report that it absorbs vibrations as well or better than expected.

Versatility is great, but versatility with minimum accessory parts is a cherry on top that professional customers can appreciate.  After handling it, we were pleasantly surprised by the easy blade removal and replacement that the Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool affords.  No extra tools are needed, giving another nod to Bosch design.

Bosch Starlock Oscillating Tool

A LED light illuminates the region under attack by the blade.  I like this because, as stated before, close-quarter and tight-squeeze situations are inevitable.  Even a well-lit work area can have shadowy blind spots that the well-positioned and bright LED blast away.

Bosch Starlock Oscillating Tool

The Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool purchase comes with a storage case which is a very practical place to store your various blades.  Misplacing a blade is akin to losing one of the tool’s features. The handy case helps you keep everything relating to the multi-tool together, in one convenient place.

After some work, it was noted that there wasn’t much vibration generated by the tool, even at higher OPMs.  Ease of blade replacement was confirmed.  Lastly, and perhaps most important, the overall user-friendly ergonomic design was noticeable and reflects well on the Bosch brand.

Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool Value

After a close look, we have to admit that this tool is worth the price.  Currently available for $149.00 at Lowe’s, it offers a flexible and powerful cutting capacity that is not easy to match.

Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool Wrap Up

This piece of equipment is certainly not unique when it comes to providing cutting capacity through various woods, metals, and plastics. Having said that, the ergonomic design, ease of use, and lack of accessory tools needed to change blades certainly put the Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool in a good light.  It should certainly be in the running if you need a powerful, cordless, low-vibration, lightweight, oscillating cutting tool.

On the scale of DIY-to-professional, Bosch lands squarely on the professional side of tool manufacturing.  What this means for you: Bosch tools such as the Bosch Freak Impact Driver are generally more rugged, more durable, and more powerful than similar competitors’ tools.

Bosch Freak Impact Overview

With that in mind, we zoom in on the Bosch Freak Impact Driver. Specifically, we look at the GDX18V-1800B12, 18V Brushless 0.25-inch and 0.5-inch 2-in-1 bit/socket impact driver.  Right away, I have to admit that this is a cool concept where you can use sockets or bits to drill, drive, loosen or tighten even the most stubborn nuts and bolts. You might miss some of the usual torque provided by professional impact drivers, but you’ll love the efficiency provided by this hybrid tool that is both an impact and drill driver.

Bosch Freak Impact Features

The Bosch Freak Impact Driver is 5.8 (head length) x 3 x 8.2 inches and 4.00 lbs. It is powered by an 18V EC brushless motor which is in turn powered by an 18V Li-ion “Slim Pack” 2 Ah battery.  The motor acts on a “hammer and anvil” design that generates maximum torque upon application, and up to 0-4,200 impacts per minute. As mentioned earlier, this is a departure from the typical powering mechanism for drills that can’t match the torque that the Bosch Freak Impact delivers.

The purchase gets you a Bosch 18V Li-Ion 2 Ah battery and compatible charger.Bosch Freak Impact

This tool combines an ergonomic handle with a variable-speed trigger. According to Bosch, “The variable-speed trigger provides accurate driving speed. The two-in-one bit/socket drive increases both convenience and power. Bits can stay conveniently inserted when using deep sockets, and more torque is transferred directly thru the 1/2 In. square drive anvil. There is no more torque loss through socket adapters or broken socket adapters. The driver has an LED light to illuminate the work area.”

Bosch Freak Impact

High torque and adjustable speed focused on a small head will do wonders for working in tight spots.

This tool gives versatility.  The Bosch Freak Impact accepts bits and sockets, as previously mentioned, providing two major tool functions.

Bosch Freak Impact

Lastly, the Bosch Freak Impact purchase comes with a convenient bag for the tool and related accessories.

Bosch Freak Impact Value

At the time of this writing, this tool kit is priced at around $99 on Amazon. A little higher than a standard impact or drill driver by themselves, but this is a 2-in-1 tool, so that’s a pretty fair price. Also note that this purchase lands you a kit, not just a bare tool, which includes the battery, charger, bits, bit holder, and canvas bag. So again, for a Bosch quality tool, this is a good value. You may also purchase a pretty standard 3 or 4-year “protection plan” that covers parts and labor.

Bosch Freak Impact Thoughts

I have almost always found Bosch products to be strong and dependable.  In this instance, there is the added benefit of having one tool instead of two – handling bits and sockets with the same piece of high-torque equipment is something I certainly appreciate.

Bosch Freak Impact Wrap Up

This tool certainly performs well as far as I can determine. I’d like to leave this review with my favorite features of the Bosch Freak Impact Driver:

  • A responsive trigger that allows adjustable-speed functionality
  • Up to 1,800 in-lbs applied torque and 0-4,200 impacts per minute
  • LED-lit small head that allows you to access tight spots and inconvenient connections
  • And let’s not forget, it’s a 2-in-1 tool

Bosch Power Tools is geared towards skilled tradesmen invested in heavy-duty work that demands high quality and consistently superior performance.  As such, the Bosch brand is directly competing with tool producers like Hilti, Metabo, and Makita.  Let’s take a look at the Bosch X-LOCK Grinder.

Bosch X-LOCK Grinder Overview

Grinders – angle grinders to be specific – are useful in metal polishing, smoothing, and to some extent cutting applications.  When it comes to grinders, Bosch is considered to be a leader in the market.  They are reliable and powerful.  And this new Bosch X-LOCK Grinder offers some pretty cool features.

Bosch X-LOCK Grinder Features

Here we have the GWX18V-8N model (ASIN: B09F16FNR8). A 4.5 – 5 in. angle grinder that weighs in at 4.85 pounds, is 4.3 x 11.8 x 5.1 inches.   The Bosch X-LOCK Grinder’s 8-amp brushless motor delivers 11,000 RPM, and the grinder is covered by a 1-year warranty.

The Bosch X-LOCK Grinder is part of the next-gen Lithium-ion CORE18V 8.0 Ah Performance Battery line of tools. According to Bosch, this battery platform provides the power equivalent of a 10-amp corded grinder.
Bosch XLock Grinder

The slide switch is easy to engage. The switch locks in the “on” mode, allowing ease of use and tool angle manipulation without needing constant attention as required by the competing paddle switch design. Additionally Bosch states on their website: “The grinder provides an X-Brake, which helps provide a rapid stop of the wheel when the switch is turned off. It also includes other advanced electronics, such as drop control, KickBack Control, restart protection, and soft-start technology. The grinder has connected-ready capability, supplying an interface that works with the optional Bosch Connected Tool Module to link to the free Bosch Toolbox app.”

Bosch XLock Grinder

I also like the ergonomic handle.  It is slim compared to other models and manufacturers.  This is important since maneuverability and precise angling is critical in certain grinding jobs.  Even a slightly excessive thickness in a grinder handle can compromise desired placement of the abrasive wheel.  This may translate into less-than-desirable results.

Bosch XLock Grinder

By their nature, most grinding jobs produce dust and grit. Pictured here, Bosch incorporated a screen to protect the motor from debris that might otherwise get sucked in and pose its own type of performance and safety hazard.

My favorite feature is the X-LOCK wheel change.  X-LOCK makes changing wheels up to five times faster and without any extra tools.  The above images show changing steps that can be done swiftly and safely without a spanner wrench or flange nuts.  There are numerous angle grinders out there, and most require tools to replace or change wheels.  This nod towards hassle-free operation and better productivity sets the Bosch X-LOCK Grinder apart.

The Bosch X-LOCK Grinder comes with a side handle that can be fitted on either side of the tool.

Bosch X-LOCK Grinder Value

The Bosch X-LOCK Grinder (tool only, no accessories) can be had for under $200 on Amazon. Considering their quality, and reputation for being one of the best professional tool brands, this is a great value.  Even if you have to also invest in a Bosch battery and charger.

Bosch X-LOCK Grinder Thoughts

From handling this grinder, and with my experience, I can say this angle grinder is powerful and easy to work with.   The slim handle, low weight, ample cordless power, and slide switch allow for accurate, detailed work.  And again, one of my favorite features is the X-LOCK toolless wheel change. For any given job, Bosch can hold its own.

When it comes to LDMs (Laser Distance Measurer), Bosch is at the forefront.  They are known for having some of the best LDMs on the market.  In fact, some might say they have too many in their lineup.  But with such a broad selection, you’re almost guaranteed to find the perfect LDM for your specific application. So let’s jump into the Bosch Blaze Green LDM.

Bosch Blaze Overview

Bosch is one of my favorite power tool manufacturers.  While they are not always first to market, they offer some of the toughest tools around.  The LDMs are no different.  They are easy to use, reliable, and accurate.  Most LDMs use a red dot.  Here is where Bosch adds a flair to their system and uses a green dot.  A green dot is more expensive to produce but is easier to see.

Bosch Blaze Features

Bosch Blaze

The Bosch GLM165-27CG is designed to measure up to 165′. And according to Bosch it “uses green-beam technology, which generates a point/dot up to 4X brighter than standard red beams.” This LDM also provides accuracy up to 1/16″ and has an IP 65 rating.

One cool feature is you can use either the provided rechargeable battery pack or 2-AA batteries.  This is very helpful because we all know that when we need it the most, we forgot to charge the batteries.

Bosch Blaze

I love the push-button front panel.  Very easy to read, has responsive buttons, and is simple.

Bosch Blaze

The screen is large and easy to read even in brighter environments.

Bosch Blaze

The LDM comes with rechargeable batteries and a charging cable  It also comes with a protective case.

Bosch Blaze

Scrolling through all the options is easy and intuitive.

Bosch Blaze

On the back is where you can change the batteries or attach the LDM to a tripod.

Bosch Blaze Performance

Bosch Blaze

I have used a lot of different LDMs over the years.  This is by far the best one I have used.  Yes, it’s easy to read and see the green dot, but what I like best is the simplicity of the tool.  Taking a measurement is easy, but using the buttons and navigation is by far the best.  Sometimes these LDMs have too many buttons and too many features which can make them frustrating.  This one is easy to use and easy to navigate and why I think it is the best on the market.

Bosch Blaze

While I love this tool, I do have issues.  First, not everything fits in the case which is a little annoying.  I would like to have everything together and not all over the place because I know I will misplace something.  Second, which isn’t a deal-breaker, I wish they had a button on the side to take measurements and just not on the front.  Sometimes having a button on the side is easier because of how you are taking a reading

One note is on their site some people have complained they have had bad units. So I checked in with a couple of other users I know and they’ve had no issues with theirs.  And so far mine has worked great.

Bosch Blaze Value

You can pick this up at Lowe’s or The Home Depot for about $170.  For me, it’s simple, accurate, and easy to use so it’s a good value.  Plus it’s Bosch so you can be confident it will last.

Bosch Blaze Wrap Up

Bottom line, this is my favorite LDM on the market for ease of use, and reliability, and it does everything I need without all the cumbersome features.  If you are looking for a great LDM, this Bosch is your best choice and for $170, it can’t be beaten.

Wow, I am sitting here and don’t know where to begin.  Do I talk about how Bosch is one of my favorite tool companies because of their quality or do I just talk about how they just released the best portable sander?  Not really sure but I can say this Bosch Cordless Sander is just another reason why I love Bosch Power Tools.

Bosch Cordless Sander Overview

So before I get started, I want to be honest and say I have a beef with Bosch.  As I said before, they are one of my favorite power tool brands.  I love their quality, the design, and the power, but I do have a serious problem with them.  Please, please release more power tools.  Yes, I know you have all the main ones and a bunch of niche tools which is awesome, but I want more.

I also get it, you have an automotive division that is huge and probably a great money maker.  I get it, you have appliances and more.  I get it, you are a huge company and power tools isn’t a huge moneymaker.  But as a tool guy, you make some of the best tools.  They are well-balanced, powerful, efficient, and make our lives easier.  So you can’t blame me when I say give me more.

This sander is a perfect example of why Bosch leads the way.  They may not always be first to market but when they do bring a tool to market, you can be assured that it’s probably one of the toughest, well-balanced, and a leader in its class.  This brings me to the Bosch Cordless Sander.

Bosch Cordless Sander Features

Bosch Cordless Sander

The GEX18V-5N is a Cordless Sander from Bosch.  This 5″ random orbital sander is designed for comfort and reliability.  The sander only weighs 2.4 lbs.

One feature you can not see but feel is the vibration damping element which helps reduce vibration and user fatigue.

The sander is powered by the Bosch 18V battery.  If you want to get the most out of this sander, the Core battery is the best option.

Bosch Cordless Sander

As you can see, it has a rubber over-mold design and feels like a traditional corded sander.

Bosch Cordless Sander

On the front of the sander, there is a push-button switch to turn the sander on and off.

On the side, there is a wheel dial to adjust the speed from 6,000 to 10,000 OPM’s.

The pad is a hook and loop design with 8 holes for dust collection.

Speaking of dust collection you can use the included dust bag or hook this up to a dust collection system.

Bosch Cordless Sander Performance

It’s hard to show a sander in action with just pictures but tried to show a little bit on a rough 2×4.  Also, check out our video below.  What I can’t show but I can explain is how comfortable and well-balanced this sander is.  This is mainly accomplished by the way they designed it with the battery in the back.

All the other sanders have the battery sitting on top or right next to the top of the tool which is great to have all the weight in the center but it also makes it hard to use for longer periods of time since your hand has to be wide open in order to grip the sander.  The gripping for this Bosch is more like a traditional corded sander which is comfortable.

This sander has one of the best dust collection systems around, corded or cordless.  I am not sure how they do it differently but it captures almost all of the dust.

Bosch Cordless Sander Value

You can pick this sander up on Amazon.  The bottom line, if you are looking for a sander, this is worth every penny.  I love the power, the balance, and the build quality.  As with other Bosch tools, you can’t go wrong.

Bosch Cordless Sander Wrap Up

Overall, I am pretty much sure you realize I am sold on this sander.  This is by far the best cordless sander on the market at the time of this article.  I love the balance and how easy it is to work with and control.  Next, I like the power and how I can dial it down to any speed to match my work.  As with any Bosch, the build quality is top-notch.  So if you want the best sander around, this is it, hands down.

Listening to a radio on the job can often make your day go by a little faster. So when you have the opportunity, your radio needs to deliver. It should be rugged, easy to transport, have decent sound quality, and sometimes you want it to be loud. I am usually satisfied and often impressed with Bosch tools, so my expectations were pretty high for this compact Bosch Jobsite Radio (Model GPB18V-2CN). Let’s see if it is as impressive as their other products.

Bosch Jobsite Radio Overview

They call this a jobsite “radio” because it is after all a radio. However, I think more of us use these as a speaker to transmit sound from our phones, MP3 players, etc., and the fact that this has an AM/FM tuner is just a bonus. So, for this review, I’m going to call it a “radio”, but most of my review is using it as a Bluetooth-connected speaker.

I read through the manual to learn about all the features this radio has to offer, and then I tested out each of them. What I came away with is when using this radio on the job, I wouldn’t need to reach for my phone nearly as often. When connected via Bluetooth you can adjust volume, stop/change song selection, check the time, and answer a phone call all from the radio’s controls. If you need to make an outgoing call, you’ll just need to initiate the call from your phone and then you can put your phone in your pocket and conduct your conversation hands-free.

Bosch Jobsite Radio Features

Bosch Jobsite Radio

This compact Bosch Jobsite Radio is 13.7″ x 6.1″ x 6.1″ and weighs 5.5 lbs.; 6.8 lbs. with the battery. The generous-sized hexagonal handles at each end make it easy to grab and carry. The formed plastic case seems durable; the overall construction is IP54 rated.

There are two power source options: Utilizing a Bosch 18V battery allows you to be cordless. Or you can use the provided 120V AC/DC power cord. You can also charge your phone or other USB devices from this radio (USB cord not included).

Two sides of the radio have “feet”. The feet on the bottom or base-side are rubber-tipped, providing a little slip resistance. The feet on the control panel side allow you to place the radio face down without damaging the two control panel knobs. The radio must be placed face down to open the battery bay door, which I thought was a bit awkward.

Bosch Jobsite Radio

When the “Call” mode is set to “ON” you can conduct your phone conversations hands-free. Incoming calls can be answered by depressing the “forward” button above the green phone icon. Calls can be ended by depressing the “back” button just above the red phone icon.

The clock is always displayed, so you can see the time at a glance. There is a provided 3V coin battery for the clock so you don’t have to reset it every time you use the radio. The front LCD screen illuminates when you are actively working with the controls then after a few seconds of inactivity the screen goes dark. The menu information is still displayed, but it is just not as easy to read from a distance. I would have liked the option to keep the screen illuminated, especially while using the power cord. But it is worth noting that when you place or are receiving a phone call the screen illuminates automatically.

Bosch Jobsite Radio

As I mentioned before this has an AM/FM tuner. The antenna can be lifted and pivoted to find the best reception. As with most radios AM stations came in well, but we had a hard time getting good reception for any FM stations from inside our brick building. As expected, the reception outside was a bit better. There are eight FM presets and four AM presets. You can select the station presets yourself or you can utilize the “Autosource” feature. Here’s how Bosch explains this feature: “…, the radio scans the active band (AM, FM1 or FM2) and stores the strongest four stations on preset buttons “1”, “2”, “3”and “4” on that band. This is especially helpful when traveling to a new area.” We tried it, and it worked as intended.

Bosch Jobsite Radio

The Bosch Jobsite Radio utilizes Bluetooth 5.0. For those of you that are unfamiliar with Bluetooth 5.0 it is described as follows: “Bluetooth 5.0 supported devices can transfer data up to 2 Mbps, which is twice the speed as Bluetooth 4.2.” According to Bosch Bluetooth 5.0 also allows you to stream from your device to the radio from up to 100 ft. away. To test this out I connected my phone via Bluetooth and walked away from the speaker. I made it to just over 100 ft. before the signal started to break-up. This was with keeping the phone in my hand and always in a direct line to the speaker, not in my pocket or behind me. I then put my phone in my back pocket, still facing the speaker, and pretty much lost signal. It didn’t regain a good connection until I was within 30 ft.

An additional feature on this radio and part of the Bluetooth 5.0 technology is the ability to create a “True Wireless Stereo (TWS)” with two of these speakers. You pair them simultaneously (only available when Bluetooth is active source), make one unit a left speaker and the second a right speaker for a wider stereo sound field.

The AUX IN, USB Port, and 18V DC socket are located under this watertight rubber flap. However, you cannot close this flap if any of these are being utilized, so any of the unused/open ports will be exposed and unprotected. I don’t care for this configuration, but it is fairly common. The radio comes with a 6″ auxiliary cable. There is not a designated storage space for this cord when not in use. I would probably store it in the battery bay.

There are two front-facing “high-performance” speakers on the control panel side. The bass speakers are located on the bottom or base side of the radio. And Bosch touts that this radio has “enhanced bass response”. Total output is stated to be 15 W, but I’m not so sure (more on this below). The radio has a very basic equalizer with bass and treble settings from 1 to 5.

You can position the radio on its bottom feet (bass speakers facing down), standing up on end, or hanging from the integrated hook. It was loudest when sitting on end or hanging. To reach MAX volume you’ll need your phone volume at MAX and then the radio at its MAX setting of 30. But, I need to say this, when it is at MAX volume on both your phone and at the radio it is just NOT very loud. I mean my 16 W JBL FLIP 4 is almost twice as loud. To be sure I wasn’t missing something, I compared the sound output using both power sources, then Bluetooth vs. AUX IN, and also Bluetooth vs. AM/FM reception. None of these options offered any significant boost in volume.

There is a convenient, integrated hanging hook on one end that can be stowed away when not in use.

Bosch Jobsite Radio Performance

This radio has a lot of features that could make it a great jobsite radio, especially the hands-free phone option and the 100 ft. Bluetooth range. I like its size and feel and that it can sit flat, stand on end, or be hung from its hook. The hybrid power flexibility and the USB charging port are both very convenient to have. And with an IP 54 rating, I’d feel safe using it in most conditions. I just wish it was louder.

Bosch Jobsite Radio Final Thoughts

As I stated at the beginning of this article, we want a jobsite radio to be rugged, easy to transport, have decent sound quality, and sometimes we want it to be loud. I’ve always been pretty impressed with Bosch tools, so would I consider this Bosch jobsite radio to be a great choice? The IP54 rating is more than adequate, the overall construction seems like it would be durable, and the handles are easy to grab, even with gloves on. The sound quality is decent, and the 100 ft. Bluetooth range is well above average. It can be controlled almost entirely phone-free, and the hands-free phone option is a real bonus. All that being said, it just isn’t loud enough, and that could be a deal-breaker for some people.

When it comes to professional power tools, Bosch is one of the best.  While Bosch is known for their concrete tools, they are also known for their battery technology, their cordless tools, and their tough tools that last on any job site.  Today we are going to take a look at the Bosch Cordless Jig Saw, the Barrel Grip.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw Overview

All the major power tool manufacturers have a Jig Saw in their lineup, but not many really excite me.  I feel most of the Jig Saws are in the lineup to just say they have a Jig Saw, but they all seem the same, no excitement.  Well, I am a huge fan of the Festool Jig Saw and Hilti’s but not the price. So when I found out about the Bosch Cordless Jig Saw, I wanted to give it a shot and see if this was something different.

Features

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

The Bosch Cordless Jig Saw (GST18V-47N) offers a 1″ stroke length which has a capability of up to 4-1/2″ in wood and up to 7/8″ in aluminum. Bosch designed this with an aluminum gearbox with an insulated cover to help provide durability.

The top of the handle and barrel both have an overmold rubber grip for comfort and better control.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

The saw is powered by the Bosch 18V Core battery. While you can use any Bosch 18V battery, I prefer it with the 4Ah for balance and run time.

The saw is designed with a multi-directional blade clamp that will hold T-shank blades.  To insert a blade, just push the blade into the clamp and it will auto-lock.  No need to mess with a lever.  When you want to take the blade out, just turn the lever about a 1/4″ turn and the blade will eject, which is great in case the blade is hot.  This way you’re not trying to hold on to a hot blade.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

On the side of the saw, there is a slide switch to turn it on and off. Once you turn off the saw, the tool immediately stops the stroke mechanism which is pretty cool for a Jig Saw.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

Another great feature of this saw is that it offers four orbital action settings that will deliver varied blade strokes for different materials.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

The saw offers a large base and comes with a no-mar shoe guard.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

Under the handle, there is a variable speed dial to ramp up from 550 to 2,700 SPM.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

The saw features a removable Anti-Splinter Insert.

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

On the back of the barrel, there is a push-button switch to turn on and off the LED light.

Performance

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

Sure the saw is comfortable and easy to use but this has the best blower that I have ever seen on a Jig Saw.  As you can see from above, it doesn’t just clear a one-inch path in front of the saw-like all other Jig Saws we have used.  This clears a large path so I can see far in advance and know exactly where I am cutting.  All I can say is, impressive.

This is one of the easiest Jig Saw to use.  You can be extremely precise, make turns, even tight turns without having issues such as chattering.  We cut through a bunch of different wood and materials all without any issues.  When we put the correct blade on, the cut was smooth.  The picture above was just to show using a thick blade and how tight you can go even with that.

Value

You can pick up the Bosch Barrel-Grip Jig Saw on Amazon as a bare tool for $149.  If you don’t own any Bosch, you will need to invest another $75 for a 4Ah battery and charger. So your price for the saw will jump up to $225.

Overall, I think this is a steal either way.  If you have a battery, this is a great deal.  Heck even if you have to invest the extra $75 for battery and charger, you can’t go wrong.  I would have thought this was closer to a $350 price tag so this is way below what I would have expected to pay.

Wrap Up

The bottom line, this is the best saw on the market.  Yes, I know Festool people will get mad at me, but for $255 less, I get a cordless saw that is tough, easy to control, comfortable and I know it will last.  How can you go wrong?  Sure I do wish the Bosch had some sort of dust management system like the Festool, but for me, it’s not a deal-breaker.  If you want a great Jig Saw, this is the Jig Saw to own.
