I’ve been a Hilti fan for decades—since the late ’80s, actually—and that loyalty isn’t just about brand name. It’s about trust. Tools come and go, but Hilti has always stood out for one reason: quality. That’s exactly what you get with the Hilti VC 5, their compact wet/dry construction vacuum with a pushbar. Whether it’s their rotary hammers, impact drivers, or something as straightforward as a vacuum, Hilti doesn’t cut corners.

A lot of brands chase headlines—trying to be first to market, rushing products out to boost sales. Hilti doesn’t play that game. They take their time, and it shows. Every tool they release is built to withstand jobsite abuse, offer real value to workers, and function like a true professional-grade piece of equipment. The VC 5 is no exception. It might not be flashy, but it’s rugged, powerful, and designed to get the job done day in and day out.

Hilti VC 5 Construction Vacuum Overview

Hilti VC 5 Construction Vacuum

This is the Hilti VC 5 in all its compact glory. It’s a wet/dry vacuum designed specifically for daily jobsite cleanups, whether you’re dealing with fine dust or wet messes. Despite its small size, it holds up to 5 gallons and delivers a strong 140 CFM of suction, which is impressive for something this portable. When equipped with the optional HEPA filter, it also meets OSHA 1926.1153 Table 1 compliance standards for silica dust, making it a serious tool for keeping your jobsite safe and clean.

The VC 5 is built to move with you. It’s got large rubber wheels in the back that handle rough jobsite terrain, and locking casters in the front to keep it steady when you need it to stay put. Whether you’re dragging it across concrete or rolling through a garage, it moves smooth and stays stable. It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference when you’re constantly on the move.

Hilti VC 5 Construction Vacuum

Up front, the Hilti VC 5 keeps things simple and functional. The hose port is easy to access.  Just to the right is the on/off dial, which is large and easy to turn—even with gloves on.

Hilti VC 5 Construction Vacuum

Right on top of the VC 5, you’ll find one of its most useful features—the push-button filter cleaner. Just give it a press and it knocks the dust loose from the filter to help maintain suction without having to open the vacuum or dig anything out. It’s quick, easy, and keeps the performance strong, especially during heavy use.

Hilti VC 5 Construction Vacuum

The large carrying handle on top makes moving the VC 5 super convenient. It’s sturdy and gives you a solid grip when lifting it into a truck, carrying it up stairs, or just repositioning around the site. And when you’re not using it, it folds away cleanly so it’s not in the way or snagging on things.

One of the standout features of the VC 5 is the retractable push bar. When extended, it gives you easy control and maneuverability—especially useful when rolling it across larger job sites or rough surfaces. When you don’t need it, the bar folds back neatly into the body, keeping a low profile and staying completely out of the way.

Hilti VC 5 Construction Vacuum

The VC 5 comes with an 11.5-foot power cord, giving you plenty of reach to move around without constantly switching outlets. It’s long enough for most jobsite setups, and when you’re done, the cord wraps neatly around the back for easy storage.

Hilti VC 5 Construction Vacuum

On the side of the VC 5, you’ve got on-board storage that actually works. It’s built to hold the metal extension tubes securely, so they’re always within reach and not rolling around your truck or jobsite. Everything stays neat, tight, and easy to access, which means less setup time and fewer lost parts.

Hilti VC 5 Construction Vacuum

The Hilti VC 5 comes equipped with a 10-foot hose, providing ample length for most jobsite tasks. This allows for efficient cleaning without the constant need to reposition the vacuum. While a 10 foot hose is nice, it would be great to see Hilti offer an upgrade length for those who want something longer when you are cleaning a larger area.

The dust bag inside the VC 5 does a great job of trapping fine particles and keeping everything contained. What I really like is that when you remove the bag, it has a built-in cover that automatically seals it off. That means no clouds of dust flying everywhere when it’s time to empty it—just pull it out, toss it, and move on.

While the bag is nice, this is equipped with a HEPA filter which we all know is great for any jobsite.

The wide floor nozzle is perfect for quick cleanup of dirt and debris across larger areas. It covers a lot of ground fast and gets right down to the surface. What’s nice is that you can swap out the brush inserts for rubber blades, which makes it ideal for wet pickups too.

Hilti VC 5 Construction Vacuum Performance

To put the Hilti VC 5 to the test, we ran it through three real-world scenarios: sawdust, bolts, and water. First, we dumped out a full bucket of sawdust and used the floor brush attachment to clean it up. Honestly, it picked it up way faster than we expected—no clogs, no lag, just clean passes. Next, we sucked up large nuts and bolts, and the hose had zero issue picking them up, which speaks to both the suction power and the durability of the hose. Finally, we hit the bucket of water—and the VC 5 sucked it completely dry in no time. No hesitation, just pure power. This vacuum definitely punches above its weight class.

Hilti VC 5 Construction Vacuum Value

The Hilti VC 5 starts at $349, and if you want the version with the push bar, it comes in at $414. And honestly? It’s worth every penny. You’re getting a compact, powerful vacuum, easy to move around, and built to handle tough jobsite cleanup without breaking a sweat. For how well it performs across dust, debris, and liquid, it easily justifies the price.Hilti VC 5 Construction Vacuum

Hilti’s Tool Warranty: 20 years on materials and workmanship, 2 years on wear and tear, and in and out of the repair center in one day, guaranteed, or the repair is free.

But what really sets it apart is what comes with the vacuum—Hilti’s legendary support network. If something goes wrong, they’ve got people in the field who can get you taken care of fast. That means less downtime, fewer headaches, and more time actually getting work done. It’s not just about the tool—it’s about the total package, and Hilti delivers.

Hilti VC 5 Construction Vacuum Wrap Up

The Hilti VC 5 might be compact, but it delivers big-time performance. It handles everything from fine sawdust to heavy bolts and even standing water—without skipping a beat. It’s easy to maneuver, easy to maintain, and powerful enough to handle serious cleanup jobs on any site. Add in features like the push-button filter cleaner, folding push bar, and on-board storage, and it’s clear this vacuum was built with the pro in mind.

At the end of the day, it’s a Hilti—built to last, built to perform, and backed by one of the best service networks in the industry. If you need a vacuum that’s ready to work, the VC 5 is more than up to the task.  It’s the best compact vacuum we have tested.

It’s time to upgrade your snow blower, but what should you get: gas or electric? This is the common debate when buying new outdoor power equipment (OPE) today. Electric, specifically battery-powered, OPE technology has evolved to give us more power than we ever thought possible. But does it beat gas-powered snow blowers? Today we’re doing electric vs gas snow blowers. We’re sharing the advantages and disadvantages of each to help you decide which type of snow blower is best for you.

Guide

Brief History of Snow Blowers

Henry Ariens first snow blower
Henry Ariens tests snow blower prototype. From Ariens Company.

Snow blowers and overall snow removal machines have been around for a while, but the “Sicard Snow Remover Snowblower” invented by Arthur Sicard in 1925 was a breakthrough for modern snow blowers. It was a lot bigger than the average snow blowers of today. It was pretty much a glorified four-wheel drive truck with a snow scooper and two chutes, and it reportedly could throw snow up to 90 ft. But it was a beast. It wasn’t practical for clearing the suburban driveways of today.

In 1935 Henry Ariens, founder of The Ariens Company, managed to shrink down Sicard’s snow blower when he invented the first push snow blower. However, it would be about 20 years before Ariens would put a consumer snow blower on the market. Toro beat Ariens to market by almost 10 years with the 1952 Toro Snow Hound (check out this original ad).

The Toro Snow Hound played a big role in popularizing snow blowers among everyday homeowners. It was available to buyers for $159.95 (so that’s around $1,800 in today’s dollars) and it inspired more brands to develop their own consumer snow blowers. These first models ran on gas and could last a really long time with regular maintenance.

Don’t believe me? Watch this 1969 Toro Snow Hound 20 in. Snow Blower go to work in this video by Mowers N Blowers.

From here consumer snow blowers continued to develop. Today consumers can readily choose between first-, second- and third-stage snow blowers. Snow blowers have grown in regards to both power and clearing paths, and consumers now have a wide variety of electric snow blower options available.

Gas Snow Blowers

Electric VS Gas Snow Blowers: CRAFTSMAN 26 Select two-stage gas snow blower

To compare electric vs gas snow blowers you really need to take a closer look at each type of snow blower. We’ll start with gas. Of course each type has their own advantages and disadvantages. Here are the benefits of gas-powered snow blower.

Pros of Gas-powered Snow Blowers

  • Generally cheaper, at least up front.
  • More gas models are currently available for 2-stage snow blowers and the only current option for 3-stage snow blowers.
  • Can run as long as you have fuel. No waiting during recharge.
  • Gas is long-standing and reliable technology. With regular maintenance, a lot of these machines have proven to last a long time.
  • Dominant power source for your large second- and third-stage snow blowers.

While these are great reasons to choose a gas-powered snow blower there are some definite disadvantages.

Cons of Gas-powered Snow Blowers

  • Heavy machines that can be more difficult to handle.
  • Requires regular maintenance.
  • Emits fumes that aren’t good to breathe and are harmful to the environment.
  • Louder than electric alternatives. This could be considered annoying to the user or people nearby such as neighbors. It can also make the user less aware of their surroundings while using the snow blower.

Electric Snow Blowers

Electric VS Gas Snow Blowers: EGO 28 in. 2-stage electric snow blower

When it comes to electric vs gas snow blowers, gas always reigned supreme. However, there has been a steady rise in electric snow blowers over the past 15 years, and each one redefining what electric snow blowers are capable of. Here’s a look at the benefits.

Pros of Electric Snow Blowers

  • Choice of corded and cordless (battery) power source, which also gives you either a endless or reusable power source.
  • No gas or fumes, and less maintenance than gas-powered machines.
  • Generally lighter and easier to move than gas-powered snow blowers.
  • Battery-powered technology and machines are constantly evolving and there has been a steady rise of powerful electric snow blowers available on the market.
  • Wide variety of available electric first-stage snow blowers.

Again, no design is perfect. Here is a look at the drawbacks of electric snow blowers.

Cons of Electric Snow Blowers

  • Performance is limited to the extent of your cord or your battery’s run time, and there is additional waiting during charge time.
  • Generally costs more, at least upfront.
  • Newer technology, newer design. We just don’t know yet how well electric snow blowers will hold up over time.
  • Batteries should be stored away from extreme temps to avoid loss of life from exposure.
  • For snow blowers there are limited electric second-stage snow blowers and no electric third-stage snow blowers currently available.

Electric VS Gas Snow Blowers

It’s difficult to say point blank which type of snow blower is better for any individual. However, we have a few guidelines for each type that can make your decision easier.

Reasons to Buy an Electric vs Gas Snow Blower

  • You have a small to average sized driveway (or a really long cord).
  • You live somewhere with mild to moderate winters, or experience only a few severe snowstorms a year.
  • You’re mainly interested in a first-stage snow blower.
  • You want electric, or prefer to not deal with gas, fumes or engine maintenance.

Reasons to Buy a Gas vs Electric Snow Blower

  • You have a large driveway or multiple surfaces that you need to clear, and you don’t have an easily accessible outdoor power source.
  • You live somewhere with severe winters and regular snow falls of five inches or more.
  • You need a second- or third-stage snow blower.
  • You’re dealing with a small budget upfront, but can afford gas and maintenance long-term.

Lighting has come a long way since I first started construction back in 1990.  Yes, I know I am dating myself but the point is that lighting is so much better now than it used to be.  One of the biggest changes is going from hot, easily breakable halogen lights to bright, strong, clean and cool LED lights.  This brings me to today’s article, the Southwire LED Work Light.

Southwire LED Work Light Overview

If you have been following us for a while, you know how much we love Southwire as a company.  There are so many companies out there that could make themselves better if they took a couple of plays from the Southwire playbook.

The light we are covering today is one of my favorite lights around because of the size, quality, brightness, and light’s color temperature. Adequate lighting is key to any work site.  Light provides safety and also lets you see what you are doing. And poor lighting can be frustrating.  I can’t tell you how many times I have tried to work in areas with low light and it just makes everything harder.

So let’s jump in and see some of the features of this light and then we can go into why I like it so much.

Southwire LED Work Light Features

Southwire LED Work Light

Southwire has four of these work lights available.  They all have the same features and benefits, the only difference, besides weight is the lumens.  They offer 1500 (CSW1X1), 3000 (CSW3X1), 5000 (CSW5X1), and a 10000 (CSW10X1) lumen work lights.

The one we are taking a look at today is the CSW3X1 which is the 3000 lumen light.

Southwire LED Work Light

Yes, you want to be able to shine the light in any direction so they built the light with a multi-position ratching frame which makes it easier to shine the light in any direction.

The head also pivots 360° making it even easier to light up an area correctly.

Southwire LED Work Light

The 3000 lumen work light has 42 small LED lights that are protected with a clear cover.  These LED lights shine at a color temperature of 5000K which is a neutral-to-cool white light as opposed to a warm white light.

Southwire LED Work Light

The light uses a 18/3 SJTW cord. (SJTW means it is a hard service, thermoplastic cable rated for 300V and approved for outdoor use.)

Southwire LED Work Light

The top has a padded handle for comfort and a secure grip when adjusting, carrying or moving it.

Southwire LED Work Light

On the back of the light, there is a covered push button on/off switch.

As noted above, the head does pivot and I like how small the frame folds down so it’s easier to transport, store, or get into smaller places to shine light. You can adjust the frame a full 180°.

Southwire LED Work Light Performance

In regards to the performance, it’s really hard to show in a picture since the camera never takes it correctly. The first picture above is the room illuminated with our overhead incandescent lights (note the warm tones). The second and third show the same room illuminated with the Southwire LED Work Light.

In addition to the light’s performance, there are a couple of other things I really like. First, I like its dimensions.  It is lightweight (2.7 lbs.). It has a compact frame (approx. 10″ H x 9″W x 7″D) that folds up nicely for transporting or storing.

Secondly, I like the color temperature of the light.  This is a nice clean white light (5000K) and doesn’t cast a yellow tint.  So when you are working, material colors are correctly represented.  This is extremely important to an electrician so you can distinguish between red and orange, black and brown, well you get the point.

Third, I like the amount of light it gives off.  Sure, it’s not going to light up a gym but for the size and weight, it lights up a lot more than what I expected.

Southwire LED Work Light Value

The 3000 lumen LED light is about $50 on Amazon.  All in all, I think this is a great deal.  The light is a quality light, highly adjustable, and has a nice color so I would have no problem spending $50 on this light.  Remember they also have 1500, 5000, and 10000 lumen work lights.

Southwire LED Work Light Wrap up

Bottom line, this is another winner from Southwire and just another example of why I view Southwire as a great company.  I like how they care about quality and the end user.  They don’t seem like they put junk out to just try and make a buck.

This light is worth the cost and it’s a perfect compact work light that not only should all professionals own but even a homeowner. This is a perfect solution when you need quality lighting you can shine in any direction.

Southwire is one of my favorite companies.  While there is a lot to love about them, including they are a family-owned company right here in the USA. There are even more things that stand out to me. Definitely that Southwire produces quality products. And I really respect what they do for their electricians’ community. And of course their philanthropy in the USA.  But today I want to talk about something that isn’t as sexy but something we all have experience with, extension cords. So before we jump into the features of a specific Southwire Extension Cord, let’s talk extension cords in general.

Southwire Extension Cord Overview

When it comes to extension cords, I always want the best.  I have had too many experiences dealing with crappy cords.  The ends break, the sheathing is thin, it is too stiff to deal with when it’s cold; my list goes on and on.

Well, I think I found the perfect cords and wanted to share them with you. The Southwire Polar/Solar cords.  Right from the start you can tell when Southwire made these cords they didn’t cut corners.

Southwire Extension Cord Features

Southwire has a variety of Polar/Solar cords available; you can check out the Southwire Cords here. But the model I am going to focus on here is the Polar/Solar 1787SW0002 10/3 Extra Heavy-Duty 15-Amp SJEOOW 25′ Cold Weather Extension Cord.

In general, this extension cord has a lot of features to love. My favorite is it is manufactured right here in the United States of America. And here are some specific features:

  • The cord is rated for -58F to 221F, which is a wide temperature range.
  • It is a 15 Amps, 125 Volts, and 1875 Watts cord.
  • It is UL listed, which is a safety must-have.

Southwire Extension Cord

The yellow jacket makes this easy to see so it helps avoid trip hazards and makes it easy to find.  The cord is well insulated and the sheathing is abrasion, chemical, and oil resistant.

I am not sure how to adequately describe the construction and feel of the connector/receptacle ends, but they are not cheaply made. Based on my initial impression, these will be intact and in good working order for years to come. No matter how many times we unplug it by pulling on the cord instead of the actual clear molded end.

Southwire Extension Cord

One cool feature is the receptacle end will light up so you know if you have power.  No more wondering if it’s the tool, the cord itself, or if it came unplugged.

Southwire Extension Cord Performance

In a perfect world, nothing will happen to your extension cord.  However, we don’t live in a perfect world.  We live in a world where people will step on, roll things over, and even drive over extension cords.  So when it comes down to it, you want something that can take the abuse.

The sheathing on these cords is not only flexible and resistant to outside elements, but it seems thick enough to withstand a wide variety of different types of abuse.

Southwire Extension Cord

Again, I am not recommending this and I am sure Southwire doesn’t recommend this but when I roll up my cords, I always put an end through the loop so I can carry the cord by the end.  I know it puts stress on the end of the cord, but this is one of those tough cords, and I’m confident it can handle it.

One of our latest snowfalls in the Chicago area gave us the opportunity to show you how Southwire Polar/Solar extension cords perform in the cold.  I know this one is a different gauge but it is still a Southwire Polar/Solar cord.  Dan plugged in his diesel truck overnight and even after sitting out all night, the cord was still flexible and easy to work with.

Watch us test Southwire Polar/Solar Extension Cord

Southwire Extension Cord Value

The Polar/Solar 1787SW0002 10/3 Extra Heavy-Duty 15-Amp SJEOOW 25′ Cold Weather Extension Cord retails for $59.45 on Amazon.  Yes, you can get cheaper power cords but nothing like this one. You will not find a better extension cord for under $60. This cord is tough, built to high standards, offers features others don’t and stays flexible in even cold weather.

Southwire Extension Cord Wrap Up

If you are looking for an extension cord, check out the Southwire Polar/Solar line.  They are built right here in the states with quality materials and are built to last.  The fact that they are pliable in cold weather is ice(ing) on the cake.

We saw a lot of cool new and exciting products at the 2023 National Hardware show in Las Vegas.  While there were a lot of companies that stood out, MULE had a cool twist on a common tool we see and use all the time, the utility dolly.  And while we were at their booth, there was something else that caught our eye, a garage fan.  So let’s jump in and talk about the MULE Mobile Workshop and the MULE Garage Fan.

MULE – Overview

MULE might not be a name you are familiar with but they have been creating and developing products for the home hardware and ceiling fan industry for over 25 years.

Today we are focusing on two of their products, the MULE Mobile Workshop and the MULE Garage Fan.  The MULE Mobile Workshop puts a twist on the utility dolly as it offers more features than the traditional dolly such as electricity and other accessories, and even a fan.

The MULE Garage Fan is also a cool product.  When I am in the garage, I like to have some air movement instead of stale air.  However, I really don’t want to pay for an electrician to come and wire up a fan for me.  This fan is plug-and-play and easy to use.

MULE – Mobile Workshop

The MULE Mobile Workshop is something I have never seen before.  This is a utility dolly that includes a wide variety of accessories that you tend to use when working.

Need to lift and transport something heavy? No worries. The foldable loading tray can haul a wide variety of items up to 200 lbs.

Another extremely cool and helpful feature is the integrated power strip. It has three 110v 3-prong outlets and two USB ports.  How many times are you looking for extra outlets?  Now you can have easy access to multiple outlets right at your work area.

The built-in 14″ fan is literally a “really cool feature”.  Who doesn’t need a little air movement when working? On high, this fan produces 1974 CFM.

Work lights are often a must.  The built-in light puts out 1500 lumens to help light up your work area.

Mule Mobile Workshop

The 8″ no flat wheels are large enough so when you are rolling it around, small pebbles, curbs, etc., won’t keep you from transporting your tools and accessories to where you need them.

The MULE Mobile Workshop is designed with a molded tray affixed to the handle. This tray has flat surfaces as well as receptacles and holes to put and/or hang things in, keeping tools and other small items easily accessible.  Additional accessories like two styles of cup holders and a phone holder are also available.

You can check more out on their MULE Mobile Workshop.

MULE – Garage Fan

If you are like me and want some air movement, this is the perfect fan.  What I like best about this fan, besides the 3300 CFM is how easy it is to install plus it uses a three-prong cord so no extra wiring.  This is a ceiling-mounted fan so it doesn’t take up any floor or counter space. You can just grab the large handle on the bottom and swivel the fan 360° pointing it in any direction you’d like to get air movement where you want it.

Along with the above, the fan also has the following features:

  • Size – 18″
  • Motor – 3-speed AC Motor
  • Cord Length – 96″
  • Downrod – 6″ and 12″, which both are included
  • Control  – on/off, and low, medium, high, controlled with one knob
  • Retail Price – $199

Installing the fan is extremely easy, with just a couple of screws.  Once you have the fan installed, you lift up on the cover to hide the hardware and then plug the fan in and you are all set to go.

If you have a high ceiling, no worries.  The included remote will allow you to adjust the speed.

You can check more out on the MULE Garage Fan.

MULE – The Wrap

MULE used their industry experience and knowledge to develop two unique, problem-solving products.  The MULE Mobile Workshop is a utility dolly unlike any other we’ve seen. It has so many convenient features and helps you transport everything you need to your work areas. And with its long list of integrated accessories, it could definitely save a lot of time, money, and headaches.  The garage fan is an easy-to-install and easy-to-use, space-saving fan.  Can’t really ask for more than that. We were impressed with both of these MULE products that will be available sometime in Summer 2023.

RIDGID Tools is kicking up its reputation as a leader in robust and durable shop vacs with its RIDGID NXT Shop Vacuum line. RIDGID claims their line of NXT Shop Vacuums is their most powerful line of vacuums to date. RIDGID is known for its shop vacs as large as 16 gallons. The new RIDGID NXT Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum (Model #HD0300) attempts to pack the same power, durability, and reliability into a much smaller footprint. Let’s see how it measures up.

RIDGID NXT Shop Vacuum Overview

The 3 Gallon 5.0-Peak HP NXT Wet/Dry Vac is eager to prove you can pack power into a small vacuum. Its compact design makes it easy to store or take on the go. However, its corded 120V power and additional features opt to make it the first vacuum you reach for over larger shop vacs, whether you are in your home, in the shop, or on the job site.

RIDGID NXT Shop Vacuum Features

Again, RIDGID boasts its lines of NXT Shop Vacuums are the most powerful they have ever released. The 5.0-Peak HP motor provides strong suction (100 CFM) that can suck up heavier and bulkier items such as nails, bolts, wood chips, drywall chunks, and more. The hose can also be connected to the blower port to clear away things like dust and leaves.

Ridgid NXT Shop Vacuum

The 15 ft. cord allows for extended reach and tucks in the storage compartment when not in use. There is also an 18-Volt cordless unit available (HD0318).

One feature that stands out on this RIDGID NXT Shop Vacuum is the innovative “RIDGID SWEEP” feature. The vac has a built-in suction-powered dustpan (be sure to check it out in the video link below). You can sweep directly into the dustpan or glide right over a spill. This feature is great for smaller or more contained messes when you don’t want to unwind the cord and hose. This particular feature also makes it a great shop vac for the home or apartment due to its compact size.

The 6 ft. (1-7/8 in.) hose offers a nice range of use. The long hose plus 360-degree rotating hose adapters offer good maneuverability and make for easy clean-up. For those needing more hose length, there are longer RIDGID hoses available for purchase.

Ridgid NXT Shop Vacuum

This shop vac model comes with two attachments. The dust brush attachment works great for removing debris from more delicate surfaces. The crevice tool helps you reach dust, dirt, and debris gathered in those harder-to-get areas, such as narrow spaces, corners, or along the edge of surfaces. There is a built-in accessory storage compartment (not shown).

Ridgid NXT Shop Vacuum

This RIDGID NXT Shop Vacuum also has a very easy-to-use and access on/off switch. I like the strong contrast of the orange button against the black vacuum.

Ridgid NXT Shop Vacuum

This vacuum design looks like a toolbox and has a large handle with a good grip. This makes it easy to hold and carry. The handle locks into place and also folds in on itself, adding to the compact design. Again, even when the handle is folded down there is good color contrast to make the handle easy to find.

Ridgid NXT Shop Vacuum

This shop vac comes with a replaceable filter. Replacing the filter as needed preserves the motor and power of suction. The filter it comes with is great for cleaning up dust, dirt, and debris. However, you can purchase other filters including a RIDGID wet filter. RIDGID dust bags are also available. Dust bags can prevent malfunction and improve the life of your shop vac by trapping debris and preventing it from impacting mechanical elements.

It’s easy to remove the top from this 3-gallon container. The small size and rectangular shape make the RIDGID NXT Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum easy to clean and maintain.

RIDGID NXT Shop Vacuum Performance

Do you want to see the built-in dustpan feature in action? Watch this “RIDGID SWEEP” demo.

RIDGID NXT Shop Vacuum Value

The RIDGID 3 Gallon 5.0 Peak HP NXT Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum stands up in terms of value and reliability when compared to other similar shop vacuums on the market.

There are cheaper models of compact wet/dry vacuums with a few options under $100. However, RIDGID is the only brand with a lifetime warranty. Most other competitors offer warranties ranging from only 1-5 years. RIDGID shop vacuums are built to last and you may not get that with some of these less expensive models.

Overall, the price (available at The Home Depot) of the RIDGID 3 Gallon 5.0 Peak NXT Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum is a great value when you consider quality, attachments, and features compared to competitors.

RIDGID NXT Shop Vacuum Wrap Up

The RIDGID 3 Gallon 5.0 Peak NXT Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum is a great compact shop vac at a fair price. This compact vacuum provides great power and features. The smaller size may be an issue for cleaning large messes. However, even if you don’t need this product in your workshop, it’s a great portable choice for taking with you to job sites and would work great in the home.

RIDGID Tools is known for vacuum cleaners that provide enduring quality and suction power.  Today we are going over a particular item in their product line that I’m fond of: the RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum.  Typically, “backpack” style vacuums (and other tools) sit well with me.  The decreased amount of bulk and space taken up compared to conventional upright vacuums really pays off in a cluttered workspace.  With less equipment to “drive around”, especially in tight corners and hard-to-reach spots, cleaning gear like the RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum merit a closer look.

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum Overview

As alluded to earlier, any backpack vacuum comes with inherent benefits over most upright styles.  First off, there is no pulling hose, no getting caught on corners, and so on.  Overall, it is far easier to navigate and capture dust from every nook and cranny using a backpack than driving an almost cart-like little vehicle around your workspace.  I have vacuumed sawdust, baking soda, outdoor dirt, and God-knows-what-else from carpets, hardwood, and cement floors alike.  Without fail, upright vacuums can leave a little “line” of dirt right against the wall and in tight corners where clutter hinders a “smooth pass” with the upright vacuum brushes.  In such situations, either you resign to a B+ cleaning job or you make a second pass at the wall-hugging dirt with a hose accessory.  Though that isn’t the end of the world, it is an extra step that can be circumvented.  Backpack-style vacuums like the RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum reduce this kind of hassle.

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum Features

Some details and considerations to chew on:

  1. The RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum is specifically for “dry pickup” cleaning.  Don’t ignore this specification, the vacuum is likely to malfunction if try to use it as a wet-vac. Though a few drops of water won’t kill it, stick to dry jobs.
  2. RIDGID offers a lifetime warranty.
  3. Select specs, per the RIDGID website for this item:
    • RIDGID Model HDB600
    • Filtration system: one cloth filter and two dry paper filters
    • 6-quart drum
    • 20-ft. power cord

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum

The 20-ft. power cord allows plenty of maneuverability.  Unfortunately, there is no battery-powered option with this model, but still, the range afforded by the power cord is respectable.

This backpack vacuum comes with shoulder, waist, and chest straps.  The generous straps ensure comfort for users of almost any size and body shape.  I can appreciate this point; the strap versatility – which I have tried on myself and another test subject – goes a long way to ensure comfort and ease of use.  Though not a core function of vacuuming, long jobs will wear down your patience if the vacuum simply doesn’t “sit right”.  Making ergonomics a high priority in their design was a smart investment by RIDGID that, in my opinion, pays off.

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum

The bright red, large power button is easy to access when the vacuum is strapped to your back.  Also, note the thick power cord design.  Over time, backpack vacuum parts will experience a lot of pulling and tugging, not to mention even possible abrasions to electrical cords.  The thick rubber insulation helps reduce cord kinks and should provide protection and longevity for the life of the cord.

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum

Accessories include two extension wands, a crevice tool, dusting brush, and a floor tool that has your choice of a carpet brush and a floor brush.  With the 4-ft. hose, two extension wands, and your choice of attachments you can definitely reach into those deep corners, high spots, and the like. Extra filters are also included with the initial purchase of the RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum.

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum

The hose is made from a harder plastic than I anticipated.  It is 4-ft. in length and is 1-7/8-in. in diameter at the cuff.  You can see the closely-spaced ridges that serve two functions:

  1. Provide mechanical protection from external abrasions.
  2. Provide enduring flexibility and maneuverability without compromising performance.

With any vacuum, you will inevitably have to change the filters.  The RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum is designed with a dual filtration system that can process the 153 CFM this model generates.  Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) is the most direct measure of suction power, which is rendered moot without a compatible filtration system. By comparison to RIDGID’s 153 CFM, the Powr-Flite Pro-Lite Backpack Vacuum only generates 100 CFM.  Even the ProTeam Super CoachVac Backpack Vacuum pulls in a comparable 150 CFM, but for nearly twice the price.

Potential buyers would be well advised to research filtration and CFM in more detail, but to sum it up, a filtration system that can stand up to high CFM – as the RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum does – speaks very well for the product.  RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum does well in this regard.

I also went through the steps to change filters.  I felt the filters are easy to access and change.  Three metal brackets allow access to the filter.  And no tools required.

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum

One of my favorite design features of this vacuum is that all the accessories lock in place.  Again, I’ve vacuumed more times than I can count with premium as well as budget brands.  Inevitably most extended-reach accessories fall off which is frustrating. This won’t happen with this vacuum.

Another concern I’ve had with vacuums (not this one in particular), is decreased suction power with the addition of accessories.  Airtight seals are critical; during use, vacuum hoses and accessories are pulled on, and banged into corners and furniture all the time.  Whether suddenly or gradually, decreased suctioning power when utilizing accessories has turned me off from many a vacuum model that I might have liked initially. The locking mechanism on the RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum’s attachments reduces or almost eliminates suction loss due to poorly sealed connections.

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum

Something interesting I found: it turns out you can place some attachments on the waist belt.  With a complex and long cleaning job, carrying or going back and forth for hose accessories can be very inefficient.  This waist-belt-compatible design feature is great.

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum Performance

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum

Weighing in at 11.6 lb (excluding accessories), the RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum is so light, I’m tempted to say that you really don’t need the chest strap.  The waistband does a good job of keeping the backpack vacuum on your hips, supporting the vacuum’s weight without much hassle.  Having said that, we’re aware that customer preferences, body shape, and extent of use will vary, so I appreciate the chest strap to give users extra support as needed.

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum

At first, I thought RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum maneuverability and ease of use would be compromised with a harder hose material.  But it turns out that the overall design gives substantial ease of use.

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum

We put the RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum through a fair amount of work.  Though we didn’t push performance and durability to the limit, I can say that this backpack vacuum model does a great job at collecting dirt and dust. Also, again I emphasize, this model is a “dry vac” so steer clear of sucking up moisture.

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum Value

This model is available for $249.00 at Home Depot.  All things considered, I think this product from RIDGID offers decent value for the price.  Remember, the RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum generates 153 CFM; a very similar competing product generates 150 CFM but costs over $490.00.

RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum Wrap Up

I like the RIDGID NXT Backpack Vacuum. For dry pickup jobs, this is a vacuum that is hard to beat considering its power (153 CFM), lock-in-place accessories, reasonable price, and lightweight.

When it comes to electrical and lighting solutions, Southwire has it down.  They offer a wide range of temporary lighting solutions for any job site and any situation.  Southwire just released a new solution for the job site, the Southwire HANG-A-LIGHT which is a prefab temporary overhead light.

Southwire HANG-A-LIGHT – Information

  • Name – Southwire HANG-A-LIGHT Prefab Temporary Overhead Light
  • Model – T90100
  • Price – $243.27
  • Where to BuyAmazon
  • Southwire ReviewsSouthwire Reviews
  • Link to SouthwireLighting Solution

Southwire HANG-A-LIGHT – Features

When it comes to temporary lighting, this light offers a lot of features and benefits:

  • Custom Wiring Terminal – Cord Free
  • 1/2″ threaded hub for Southwire Fittings
  • Includes Steel 2 x Strain relief connectors
  • Retractable hanging clip for low profile
  • 5000K CCT
  • 13,700 Lumens
  • 120V – 277vac 50/60 HZ
  • 100 Watts
  • Custom Wiring Terminal Block

Southwire HANG-A-LIGHT – First Impressions

Back in 1991 when I was working on a new 50-story construction building in Chicago, lighting was always an issue.  At the time we only had incandescent bulbs that would break.  The light was never great but we made it work.  As the building went up, you could never really reuse the lights as they would break, the cord would be compromised and we just had to toss them out.

There is a lot to like about these Southwire lights.  First is the brightness, 13,700 is extremely bright, plus they offer a clean white light and not yellowish.  Second, the LED lights are nice because they don’t create extra heat, and they last a long time.  No worries about bumping the light and it breaking. Third, these are quality lights and the cage offers plenty of protection.  Fourth, you can reuse these.  So it might be expensive upfront but over the long run, it’s well worth the cost.

I realize these are not for everyone and every job site, so if these are not for you, check out some of their other temporary lighting solutions.  But if you want to have a well-lit job site and help prevent accidents and increase safety, these are a great investment.  High quality, powerful and reusable.

Southwire HANG-A-LIGHT – Wrap Up

Bottomline, Southwire is the name to trust in lighting and electrical products.  They have a long history and are a solid family-owned USA company.  Southwire doesn’t cut corners. Consumers always get high-quality products for a great value.  When it comes to temporary lighting, check out Southwire as they have these lights along with plenty of other solutions for the job site.

SKIL can boast the legacy of being the inventor of the handheld circular saw, a.k.a. the SKILSAW. You’ll find SKIL tools on the jobsite as well as in the novice’s woodshop, and they back their products with more than adequate, industry-standard warranties. Today SKIL continues to reinforce their reputation as industry innovators by releasing new, and/or new versions, of five essential SKIL Benchtop Tools.  With these new additions, their line of benchtop tools continues to be a respectable selection of saws, grinders, drills, and other woodworking power tools.

First off, I know we are going the way of battery-powered equipment, but corded gear still has some advantages: long-lasting, uninterrupted, high-intensity performance. With that said, let’s zoom in a bit on these new SKIL Benchtop Tools.

SKIL Benchtop Tools

SKIL recently announced five new(er) benchtop tools: Band Saw, Grinder, Scroll Saw, Belt & Disk Sander, and Drill Press.

SKIL should be commended for emphasizing safety features as well as performance. The magnified eye shield is an excellent add-on.

SKIL Belt & Disc Sander

  • Model – BB9504-00
  • Price – $179.99
  • Release Date – October 14, 2022

As with the scroll saw, the belt and table angle adjustments multiply what you can do with this belt & disk sander. Professionals often take on complex projects that require finesse as much as power. SKIL deftly combines both features in this new release.

SKIL Drill Press

  • Name – SKIL 6.2Amp 10″ Benchtop Drill Press

  • Price – $199.99

Lastly, the SKIL Drill Press gives excellent power delivery generated by its 6.2 amp induction motor.  On a personal note, I think you will appreciate, the guiding laser light and 10″ drilling capacity.

Wrap Up

I’ve been putting my SKIL dual belt & disc sander through tough jobs for years and can say that it has always been reliable.  Granted, this is only one piece of equipment among many, but I have no reason to doubt the quality of SKIL’s other products.  When you look at these five new tools, they seem to pack a lot of features for the price.  If you are in the market for some new tabletop cutting, drilling, or sanding equipment, check out these new SKIL Benchtop Tools and let us know what you think.

It seems like RYOBI tools are everywhere. Your garage, your neighbor’s yard, in the house, and even on the jobsite. The RYOBI brand is known for making great homeowner and hobbyist tools. However, some professionals think they are well made and for the cost, it’s hard to pass up. The other thing that RYOBI is known for is making tools that the hobbyists and DIY’ers have wished they could own but thought were only for the “professionals”. This 12-1/2″ RYOBI Planer is just that, a robust and compact planer that is easy to use and priced for the DIY’er. Let’s see if this RYOBI Planer is worth adding to your workshop.

RYOBI Planer Overview

Having a thickness planer opens up a lot of options for many carpentry projects. So I was excited to see how this “entry-level” planer would perform on a variety of scrap wood from around the shop.

The setup was pretty straightforward. I used the provided 7mm hex wrench and two bolts to attach the dust collection manifold. I stowed the two blade-removal magnets into their storage slots and installed the depth-adjustment crank. I completed the setup by using a level and a feeler gauge to make sure the infeed and outfeed tables were on the same plane as the inside table. It weighs almost 70 lbs., so it felt stable and secure enough to try it out without bolting it down.

Ryobi Planer

Its overall build quality, 70 lb. weight, and even weight distribution onto its base give it a very sturdy feel on the workbench.

The dust collection output manifold easily attached to my 2″ shop vac hose. The manifold can be mounted to exhaust to the left or right side of the planer.

Ryobi Planer

This planer has a 120-Volt, 15-amp motor, and a standard grounded plug. (You do need at least a 15-amp circuit.)

Ryobi Planer

The on/off switch (orange) is wide and well placed. You flip it up/out for on and down/in for off. The (yellow) lock-out key is a great safety feature. If you remove it, the planer will not power on (so don’t lose it). And in case you need it, the motor/circuit reset button is on top of the blade assembly, just above the on/off switch.

According to RYOBI the planer’s specified range of depth is from 6-1/8″ down to 5/16″. The depth gauge displayed on the sideshows inches (in 1/20″ increments) and centimeters. The depth is adjusted manually with a crank handle. Each full revolution is a 1/16″ adjustment. The recommended maximum planing depth per pass is 1/8″ or two revolutions of the crank.

RYOBI Planer Features

The planer offers good material support with an extra-long total feed surface of over 31″. The infeed and outfeed tables fold up for storage. However, to fold up the outfeed table you must remove the dust collection manifold.

Ryobi Planer

The RYOBI planer keeps the blade assembly stable, square, and level with a stainless steel, four-column frame. When you turn the depth adjustment crank, the blade assembly is evenly raised and lowered via two threaded rods (one at each end).

Ryobi Planer

The base was molded with a bolt hole at each corner if you choose to secure the planer to a workbench.

Ryobi Planer

RYOBI provides two magnets to lift the knives for changing, and a hex wrench for removing the blade cover, vacuum diverter, knob, etc. The top has handy, integrated storage for both.Ryobi Planer

The planer utilizes two blades and once the cover is off, it’s easy to clean, maintain and change the knives.

RYOBI Planer Performance

Ryobi Planer

Overall, this planer impressed me.  The 15-amp brushless motor powered through a variety of wood and didn’t have much chatter if any.

We ran some hardwood and softwood through the planer.  Here is just a quick example.  The oak, which I thought I might have an issue with, did an awesome job.  The machine didn’t bog down even when we took off a lot at each pass.

For the soft wood, again, no issues and you can see how it cleaned up the gray wood.

While it’s hard to show the true performance with pictures, we tried to use the gray wood so you can at least see how well it ran through the machine.

The integrated dust management system was great and did an exceptional job.  While it doesn’t catch everything, it does catch a majority.  The only issue is once you have the dust chute on, you can not close the back table.

RYOBI Planer Value

You can pick this planer up for $349 at The Home Depot.  My go-to planer was always the DeWALT but it is almost double the price of the RYOBI.  So if you need a planer but don’t want to pay the hefty price tag, this is a great value as it has all the power you need.

RYOBI Planer Wrap Up

The bottom line, this is a great planer for the price.  Sure it doesn’t have the DeWALT or Makita name but it does have the power.  For someone who needs a planer but doesn’t want to pay a lot or sacrifice power, this is a great option.  To be honest, this exceeded my expectations for quality and power, and I would have no problem recommending this to anyone looking for a planer.

When I think of routers, I think Porter-Cable and Bosch.  I think Porter Cable because that was my first router.  I think Bosch because they have an awesome palm router that I love.  To be honest, I never thought about Skil for Routers. However, I am not sure what is going on with Porter-Cable, they kind of fell of the map so not sure if that is one I would invest in.  So when I found out Skil had a router and I was looking for a new router, I figured why not give this Skil Router a shot.

Skil Router Overview

To be honest, I wasn’t thinking much about the Skil router.  Sure they have a great name and good tools but I didn’t know where they stood on woodworking tools.  So I thought it was just one of those tools they released to release one.  All I can say is that I was wrong.  If you are looking for a router, keep reading.

This router blew us away on performance, features, and price.

Skil Router Features

Skil Router

Skil designed this router with a 2.5 hp motor that is 14 amps and delivers a no-load speed of 10,000 to 25,000 RPMs.

Some of the included features that you can not see are the soft start and electronic feedback which keeps the motor maintaining a consistent rpm during loads.

The tool also features a live tool indicator which is an indicator that lights up when the plunge router is connected to power.

Skil Router

The router comes with a variety of extras which include: parallel guide, fixed base, dust extraction adaptor, plunge base dust extraction adaptor, 1/4″ & 1/2″ collets, and collet wrench.

One cool feature that I haven’t seen before is the LCD display.  This display lets the user select the bit type and material for suggested speed settings based on the task at hand.

Skil Router

The router handles have a nice rubber grip and they are large enough to have complete control over the router.

The router is easy to set up with three coarse depth settings with a micro-depth adjustment.

Skil Router

The router accepts both 1/4″ and 1/2″ shank bits.

It doesn’t matter if you want a fixed base or plunge, the router has both.

Skil Router Performance

Skil Router

Working with the router and setting it up is extremely easy.  Set your bit, your speed or wood type, and your set to go.  The tool will do the rest.  When I first saw this had a screen and buttons, I was taken back because I am just used to a variable speed dial.  But after using it and seeing how intuitive the router is and how it sets it up for you, I am wondering why more routers don’t have these features.

Skil Router

Once it’s set up, power was my concern.  When working with hardwood will it bog down?  Will it rip up softwoods?  The answer is “no” to both.  The router is powerful enough to go through hardwood, but it doesn’t make you fight the power when going through softwood.  I don’t feel the torque or anything else would hamper my ability to be precise, effective, and safe when using this router.

The bottom line, the performance of this router is much more than I expected.  Easy to use, easy to set up, and easy to work with, oh yeah, and powerful.

Skil Router Value

You can pick this up on Amazon for $122.  I had to double-check the price because, for $122, it’s a no-brainer.  I would have thought this would have been closer to $199 or higher.  If you are looking for a router, pick this up, it’s a steal.

Skil Router Wrap Up

If you are looking for a great router that is powerful, easy to use, and doesn’t cost a lot, this Skil router has to be your go-to router.  Plain and simple, it’s worth every penny and then some.

If you are a contractor or a homeowner, a miter saw is one of the must-have tools.  A miter saw just makes life easier.  You can make straight cuts, you can miter, you can bevel, you can set up jigs and make repeated cuts easy.  While it’s a cornerstone power tool, it’s not the cheapest tool.  You have two options, you can go with a professional-grade miter saw and pay around $500, which gives you professional features and a high-quality built tool or you can get a homeowner’s miter saw for half the price.  However, you also get fewer features and the build quality is far less than a professional saw.  Skil set out to change this scenario by offering a high-quality saw for a great value for the homeowner. So let’s take a look at the Skil Miter Saw.

Skil Miter Saw Overview

If you are not familiar with Skil, Skil is owned by a company called Chervon. Chervon bought Skil not too long ago and one of their goals is to not only grow the Skil line but make quality power tools for the homeowner.  They want to compete with the Ryobi’s and Craftsman’s of the world.  While those two companies have a head start, Skil is looking to dominate the homeowner’s market and they plan on doing that with their quality and value.  So let’s see if the Skil miter saw has a great build quality with a decent value.

Skil Miter Saw Features

Skil Miter Saw

The Skil miter saw (model MS6305-00) features as 15 amp motor that delivers 5,000 RPMs.  The saw is a dual bevel, sliding miter saw. The saw can cut up to 2×12 at 90 degrees and 2×8 at 45 degrees.

Skil Miter Saw

Instead of the motor sitting on a horizontal level, the motor is pushed up, closer to a 45 degree which helps keep it out of the way.

Skil Miter Saw

The saw comes with a 10″ 40 tooth saw blade which is a great general purpose saw blade.

Skil Miter Saw

The tabletop is all metal and larger than the other homeowner tables we have seen which makes it much easier to work with.

The saw is easy to adjust and read the numbers for both miter and bevel cuts.

Skil Miter Saw

The saw features support arms that come out on the left and right of the saw.  They will fold back into the saw if you don’t need them.

Skil Miter Saw

On the back of the saw is where you can adjust the bevel cuts.  Just turn the large red dial, move to the correct bevel angle, and lock back down.

Skil Miter Saw

The miter saw glides on two stainless steel rails for smooth operation.

Skil Miter Saw

The saw comes with a dust bag, but as most miter saws, it only grabs some of the dust.  You can hook this up to a dust collection system and get a much better collection rate.

Skil Miter Saw

To adjust the miter, just depress a button on the front, swivel the table and tighten the knob.

Skil Miter Saw

On top of the saw, Skil designed it with a sideways D-Handle.  For me, I love these handles better than the up and down handles.

On top of the saw, there is also the on/off button for the shadow line.

Skil Miter Saw Performance

Sure the saw cuts through wood with ease.  Sure, you can easily adjust the miter and bevel but two things I love about this saw is the quality and the line cut.

The quality of this saw reminds me of a professional brand where the miter, the bevel and the swing arm all feel smooth.  No fighting anything which is a huge plus.  The other item I love is the line cut.  The saw uses a shadow line which means I can see exactly where I am cutting.  With a laser line, you have to adjust it on the left or right side of the blade.  Not to mention that it can get bumped and then it has to be reset.  So I am excited that Skil went with a shadow line.

Overall, the saw operates great.

Skil Miter Saw Value

The retail price for the Skil miter saw is $250 and is sold on Amazon.  So is this a good value?  The saw is priced a little higher than the Ryobi counterpart which is about $180.  What you get is a better-built saw, a better motor, better cut line, better clamp, and better capacity.

For me, I think it’s worth the extra cost primarily for the build quality.  For some reason, I can’t stand using tools that seem or feel cheap.  I don’t like messing around with a miter saw and trying to worry about fine tuning a miter cut or having to fight the downswing on the arm.  I just want something smooth and easy to use, which I feel the Skil gives me. So yes, the upgraded price is worth the extras I get with a Skil.

Skil Miter Saw Final Thoughts

The bottom line, Skil did a great job with this saw.  I love how smooth it operates, the power of the motor, and the capacity it offers.  I think Skil did a great job sticking with their idea of producing a quality saw for a great value.

If you think you know Skil, think again.  Recently Skil was bought out by Chervon, the makers of Ego OPE.  Cheron is a company that has a long history.  Let’s just say they are the behind the scene power tool manufacturer.  They have been making power tools for a very long time and putting them under other brand names, very large names you know and trust.  So when you think of Skil, there is now a company behind the name that has the experience, dedication, and desire to create an unbelievable homeowner brand.  So let’s take a look at the Skil Table Saw.

Skil Table Saw Overview

A table saw is a great tool to own.  The saw will make your life easier.  You can cut large or small pieces of wood and you can make them straight.  However, as a homeowner, table saws sometimes present a problem.  Because most of the table saws are designed for contractors, they can be expensive and cumbersome.

What I mean by cumbersome is the stand.  Some of the stands on the market take up more room than needed.  As a homeowner, all you have is your garage, maybe a basement or a shed, but your room is at a premium, so why do you want a stand to get in the way?  Also, why do you want to mess around with setting up a stand each time and then trying to attach your table saw to the stand.

This is where Skil comes into place.  The stand is built directly into the table saw.  So you get a great, reliable saw with a built-in stand, which is perfect for the homeowner.

Skil Table Saw Features

Skil Table Saw

The Skil table saw (model TS6307-00) is a 10″ table saw. The saw can cut up to a 4×4 piece of wood at a 90º. At a 45º bevel, the saw will cut up to 2.5″.

Skil Table Saw

Underneath the table, sits the motor.  This saw has a 15 Amp motor that will power through pretty much any piece of wood, soft or hardwood. The motor provides a no-load speed of 4600 rpm.

Skil Table Saw

The saw comes with a 10″ Skil blade. The blade is a 24 tooth blade which is a general purpose blade. If you want to work with a Dado blade, you can go up to 5/8″.

Skil Table Saw

The fence features locking points at the front and back of the fence to ensure an accurate cut every time. The saw has a max rip of the left of the blade of 14″ while the right is 25.5″.

One of the key features of this saw is the rack and pinion fence which allows for smooth, fast, and accurate cuts.

Skil Table Saw

On the front of the saw, you can turn on and off the motor with a large bump off.  You can also adjust the height of the saw, along with the bevel degree. You can adjust the bevel from -2-47º with two positive stops at 0 and 45º.

Skil Table Saw

Also, on the front is where the push stick is located.  The stick is easy to access.

The built-in stand is one of the best features of this saw.  No more trying to set it up and try to align the saw with the stand.  Now you can just press a button and open up each leg and you’re set to go.

Skil Table Saw Performance

As far as table saws go, this is one of the best homeowner saws we have tested.  The saw is powerful, easy to set up, and offers a lot of features the professional table saws offer.

While it’s powerful and easy to use, two features that I love about this saw, other than the integrated stand, is the fence system.  I love the rack and pinion fence rails.  Making a quick adjustment is easy and accurate.  The rail system is smooth.

The other feature of the fence system is how it locks down. The front and back of the fence both lock down in place, which is important.  I have seen a lot of other homeowner brands where just the front locks down.  The problem with this is as you push the wood through the blade, the wood puts pressure on the fence and the fence can flex, which means you have an inaccurate cut.  So I am happy Skil has a solid fence.

Skil Table Saw Value

The table saw is retailing for $299 on Amazon.  As far as I am concerned, this is a steal.  You get a quality table saw, that has professional features and it includes a stand.  Heck, most stands cost a $100 by themselves.  So yes, $299 is a great deal.

Skil Table Saw Wrap Up

The bottom line, this is a great homeowner’s table saw.  When you compare it to other homeowner table saws in the market place, the Skil stands out for quality, features, and ease of use.

The Tank by Metabo HPT.  I think the name says it all, The Tank.  When it comes to running pneumatic tools, you need a great compressor.  You want something that doesn’t cost a lot, something that isn’t too heavy and you want something that offers power and versatility.  Well that is where The Tank comes into play

What makes The Tank so great is that it offers all that.  The unit is priced well, not extremely heavy, and has enough power to run multiple nailers.  So let’s jump in and take a look at The Tank.  Sorry, I can’t stop saying The Tank.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor – Information

  • Name – The Tank – 6-Gallon High Capacity Pancake Air Compressor
  • Model – EC914S
  • Price – $199

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor – Features

When it comes to a pancake compressor Metabo didn’t hold back on power.  Not only is the power and the capacity top-notch, but Metabo HPT also added a couple of other cool features to this tank.

The Tank is a 200 PSi with 4 cfm @ 90 PSi.  The Tank is designed to power either 2 framing nailers, 2 roofing or siding nailers, 3 15Ga or 16Ga finish nailers, or 5 18 Ga Brad nailers. As you can see, this is a pancake system compressor and it only weighs 41 lbs., which isn’t bad for this type of compressor.  Normally to run these types of tools together, you would need a twin stack compressor and they are much heavier than 41 lbs.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor

I like how Metabo HPT designed it with the gauges showing up so I can look down on the compressor and see the PSI and the regulated pressure PSI.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor

The Tank has two built-in outlets so it’s already set up to run two tools.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor

The large red knob in the front will allow the user to adjust the pressure to match the tool in use.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor

On the bottom of the feet, there are rubber feet to help stop the walking and also keep the vibration noise lower.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor

The compressor is designed with a ball turn value for easy emptying when finished for the day.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor

On top of the compressor, there is a metal handle to allow you to carry or lift the compressor.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor – Impressions

For me, The Tank is great.  I love the weight but I love power.  I love being able to run multiple nailers off one tank which means less noise, fewer power cords, and more freedom.  We could easily power two framing nailers with this single compressor.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor – Wrap Up

When we started this article, we agreed that with a compressor you want a compressor that doesn’t cost a lot, something that isn’t too heavy and you want something that offers power and versatility.  Well, that is where The Tank comes into play.  Lightweight, small, powerful, and all for a reasonable price.  So did Metabo hit a home run in your eyes?  In my opinion, they hit a home run with The Tank.

Are you a homeowner or even a contractor looking for the perfect small pressure washer that is powerful but doesn’t take up a ton of room in your shop, garage, or truck?  If so check out our Greenworks Electric Pressure washer Review.  This little unit is surprisingly powerful and extremely easy to use.

Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer Overview

Having a pressure washer on hand is bittersweet, well at least for me.  I really only use a pressure washer a couple of times per year.  I use it to clean my patio furniture once a year, my house once a year, and my grills twice a year and that is it.  In the past, I have always had to deal with storing a pressure washer in my shed and taking up a ton of space.  Don’t even get me started on dealing with the gas when I do use it.  Since it’s not a weekly tool I use, the gas goes bad because I forget to treat the gas.

That is why when we had the opportunity to try out the Greenworks pressure washer, I have to admit I thought it would be a perfect fit for me.

Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer Features

Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer

The Greenworks pressure washer, model GPW1704 is PWMA certified and generates 1.2 GPM and 1700 PSI, which means it can tackle hard jobs around the house.

The pressure washer is electric and has a 35′ power cord that has an inline GFCI for protection.  The unit pulls 13 Amps.

To put you at ease, the pressure washer comes with a 3-year warranty.

Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer

The handle features a traditional D-Handle with a pull trigger.

Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer

The unit comes with a 20′ 1/4″ diameter hose.

Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer

Looking down on the unit you can access the tips and turn the pressure washer on and off.

Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer

The unit even comes with a soap applicator which does an awesome job at lathering up what needs to be cleaned.

Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer

The tip features a quick connect system to change tips.

Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer

On top of the unit is where you can store and access the different tips which are a 40-degree nozzle and a turbo tip.

Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer Performance

I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting much since it was electric and small.  However, the pressure washer did amaze me how powerful it was.  We cleaned the Cub Cadet, my truck, patio furniture and more.  So here is what I love about this pressure washer.

I love how small and compact the pressure washer is.  This means not only is it easy to carry it where I need it but when I am not using it, it’s not taking up a ton of room in my garage or shed.

I love how I don’t have to deal with gas.  Just plug it in and go.  No messing around.

I also love how easy it is to use.  The pressure washer is simple to set up, break down for storage, and easy to operate.  I really can’t ask for more.

If I did have to change one thing, I do wish I could store or organize the cord on the unit.  However, since the unit is already small, it’s not a big deal.  I ended up buying Velcro straps to wraps the cords and it works out perfectly.

Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer Value

You can pick up this pressure washer at Lowes for $119.  For me, that is a steal because it frees up room in my shed, no gas to mess with and it’s powerful enough for around the house. So I do think this is a great deal.

Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer Final Thoughts

Overall this is a great pressure washer.  The power is more than enough for any work around the house and even smaller job sites.  You can clean your vehicle, grills, patio furniture, walkways, windows, deck, and more with this pressure washer.  What I love about it the best, is the size.  So when I am not using it, it’s easy to store and doesn’t take up a ton of room.
